Are You Within 10 Years of Retirement? This Could Be the Call You Need.

Retirement can feel exciting — but it can also come with a lot of questions.

Do I have enough? When can I afford to retire? What should I do with my pensions? And what will my income actually look like?

That’s why I’m running Retirement Ready Calls every Friday morning throughout September.

These sessions have previously been available through client recommendations, but this month I’m opening them up to anyone approaching retirement who wants to feel more confident and clear about their plans.

The aim is simple: more clarity, more confidence, and a better understanding of what retirement could look like for you.

No pressure, no obligation. Just an opportunity to talk through where you are and where you want to go.

Today marks 20 years of Wayne Austin IFA Ltd.

Wayne founded the business in 2006 and I’ve been privileged to be part of the journey for the last 15 and a half years, watching it grow from a small independent practice into the strong, established firm it is today.

I’m incredibly proud of the role I’ve played in that growth and, more importantly, of the trusted relationships we’ve built with our clients over the years.

Financial planning is about far more than products, markets or legislation. It’s about people. We’ve had the privilege of supporting hundreds of individuals, families and business owners through some of life’s most important moments: from retirement planning and protecting loved ones, to investing for the future, growing and selling businesses, and navigating periods of uncertainty, including challenging markets and personal difficulties.

What makes me most proud is that so much of our growth continues to come from introductions and recommendations. That trust is something we never take for granted.

I look forward to continuing to help clients and their families make confident financial decisions through life’s milestones for many years to come.

Here’s to the next chapter.

Every year the smartest people in finance make confident market predictions. And every year… the market reminds them who’s really in charge.

šŸ“ˆ In 2025 the S&P 500 finished the year at 6,845.50
āž”ļø +16.4% return
What did the experts predict?
Morgan Stanley 6,500
Goldman Sachs 6,500
UBS 6,600
Bank of America 6,666
Deutsche Bank 7,000
Stifel 4,609
Most clustered together. Most were wrong. Some were spectacularly wrong.

šŸ“ˆThe FTSE 100 closed the year at 9,931.38
āž”ļø +21.5% — its best year since 2009
What did analysts say beforehand?
• Most forecasts: 8,500 – 8,800
• UBS: 8,200
• AJ Bell: 9,000
• General outlook: ā€œmodest recoveryā€
Reality?
šŸ’„ A huge rally
šŸ’„ Financials strong
šŸ’„ FTSE actually outperformed the S&P 500

Markets don’t follow headlines. They don’t obey forecasts. They don’t care what ā€œexpertsā€ think.
They respond to:
āœ” company earnings
āœ” innovation
āœ” global economic growth
āœ” long-term value creation
This is why the most costly investment strategy is:
šŸ‘‰ ā€œWaiting until things feel clearerā€
Because clarity always arrives after the opportunity. A good financial plan doesn’t rely on predictions. It relies on discipline, diversification and time.

Yesterday, Rachel Reeves delivered her second Budget after what feels like months of speculation. In the lead-up, some rushed to sell assets, restructure property, or change pension plans. Sometimes at the expense of long-term goals.

This highlights an underrated value of a financial adviser: managing behaviour. In recent weeks, we’ve helped clients stay calm and avoid knee-jerk decisions based on clickbait headlines.

I have summarised the key changes from a personal finance perspective in our latest client newsletter.

Be careful if you are using AI for Financial "Advice".
Every person’s situation is unique and algorithms can’t see the full picture. Good financial advice isn’t just about numbers; it’s about understanding you.

Also, AI isn’t regulated. I am.
I pay FCA and FOS fees and carry PI insurance , so my clients are protected if things go wrong. With AI and self-investing… you’re on your own.

A question I’m asked all the time: How much should I save into my pension?

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, it depends entirely on your personal circumstances and financial goals.

The post below is intended as a general guide only. For recommendations tailored to your situation, it’s always best to speak with a qualified financial adviser.

Are you hoping to retire within the next 10 years?
Now is the time to start planning. Here are some key steps to get you thinking:

1ļøāƒ£ Work out how much you’d need to cover the essentials if you stopped working tomorrow.
2ļøāƒ£ Picture the lifestyle you’d like in retirement. Think holidays, hobbies, family time. Estimate the cost.
3ļøāƒ£ Review what you already have in place: pensions, savings, investments, and property.
4ļøāƒ£ Understand the level of income these assets are likely to provide at retirement.
5ļøāƒ£ Consider how inflation and rising costs of living could affect your plans.
6ļøāƒ£ If there’s a gap between where you are and where you want to be, that’s where a clear plan can help.

The earlier you start, the more freedom and confidence you’ll have when retirement comes around.
