From April 2026, over 860,000 sole traders and landlords will be required to follow new digital tax reporting rules under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

If you earn over £50,000 from self-employment and/or property income, this will apply to you.

The move to quarterly digital reporting might sound like a big shift, but with the right preparation and software in place, it can actually make managing your tax position more straightforward and give you better visibility throughout the year.

In our latest article, we break down:

• What’s changing
• Who needs to act now
• How the quarterly updates will work
• Why early preparation matters
• How software can support the transition

April 2026 may feel a long way off, but getting set up properly takes time. Acting early will help you avoid unnecessary stress and potential penalties.

UK inflation is easing, but it is not a return to normal just yet.

The latest ONS figures for November 2025 show headline CPI down to 3.2%, with CPIH at 3.5%. That is another step in the right direction as we head into 2026, helped mainly by slower price growth in food, drink, alcohol and to***co.

Read our latest blog, to look at what this data means in practice:

• why costs may feel more predictable, but not cheaper

• what higher-for-longer rates mean for loans and investment

• how cautious consumer spending can affect demand and cash flow

• why careful planning still matters, even as inflation falls

The direction of travel is encouraging, but this is not the moment for complacency. Slower inflation helps, yet the after-effects of higher prices are still very real.

The deadline for submitting your Self-Assessment return online and paying any tax due for the 2024–2025 tax year is 31 January 2026. Missing this deadline could result in penalties, although these may be waived if you have a reasonable excuse.

Today the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee voted to reduce the base interest rate from 4% to 3.75%, bringing borrowing costs to their lowest level in almost three years. The decision came in a narrow 5-4 vote as inflation continues to ease, with the Consumer Prices Index falling to around 3.2% in November, though it still sits above the Bank’s 2% target.

Styles & Associates enjoyed a joint Christmas team event with Mascolo & Styles - Outsourced Payroll last week. We kicked things off with a great meal at Bill's Restaurant in Farnham, then headed over to Farnham Golf Manor Club for some friendly competition with virtual golf, darts, and shuffleboard.

A brilliant way to spend time together, celebrate the year, and have a lot of fun along the way. 🎅🎄🎅🎄🎅🎄🎅

We took a moment in the office to celebrate Richard’s birthday, and Brittany treated us all to some homemade cake. It didn’t last long, which tells you everything you need to know about how good it was!

It was a nice break in a busy week and a reminder of how much we appreciate the people (and the baking skills) that keep Styles & Associates running smoothly.

Happy birthday, Richard - and thank you, Brittany, for the cake!
