📈 Stock Take - Last week’s Labour party conference gave the new prime minister a platform to set out his vision for the country, including some ambitious changes to housing and social care. However, the details of how this will be paid for won’t be revealed until the Budget at the end of the month, at the earliest.
💷 Wealth Check - Pensioners will lose the triple lock guarantee on their state pension from 2030 if Labour wins a second term in government.
📷 In The Picture - With government finances stretched, the prime minister last week announced plans to end the triple lock after the next election. Instead, it will increase by inflation or 2.5% – whichever is higher. (See graph in full article).

📈 Stock Take - It was a busy week for central bank watchers. First up was the US Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which on Wednesday voted unanimously to raise US interest rates by 0.25%. This was the first Fed hike in three years. Following this move, shares and bonds rose as investors reacted positively to the implicit message that under new chair Kevin Warsh, the Fed’s priority remains targeting inflation.
💷 Wealth Check - Higher numbers of pensioners are likely to be pulled into the income tax net when the state pension rises in April next year.
📷 In The Picture - The representative Morgan Stanley Broad Artificial Intelligence Index has risen approximately fourfold since 2021. While there has been a recent correct as security and oversight concerns have grown, investors appear to view AI as a powerful long-term growth theme. (See graph in full article).

💷 Wealth Check - More borrowers could be struggling with rising mortgage costs, according to data released by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) last week.*
📷 In The Picture - UK house prices have fallen for the first time in almost three years. Average property prices dropped by 0.2% in August, leaving them 0.4% lower than a year earlier, according to Lloyds Banking Group.

💷 Wealth Check - Andy Burnham’s first few days as UK prime minister began with a series of announcements aimed at reducing the cost of living. These included pledging to exempt those whose only income is the state pension from income tax, a forthcoming cut to VAT on energy bills and introducing a £2 cap on bus fares.
📷 In The Picture - The number of people above state pension age who pay income tax is set to rise by more than half between 2019/20 and 2026/27.

✒️Mid-month, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the aim of reaching a comprehensive settlement within two months. The oil price eased to pre-war levels and inflationary concerns faded, reducing expectations of further rate hikes.
🌍Led by the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, global markets delivered a volatile performance during the period, as investors weighed up the high AI capex plans against weak earnings visibility and high valuations.
💰SpaceX’s initial public offering on 12 June was one for the record books. Offered at $135 per share, the price rose to $165 on the first day of trading. It became the first new listing to reach a market value above $1 trillion on the first day of trading.
