π’ Dividend Tax Increase Now in Effect
If you take dividends from your limited company, you'll now be paying more tax on dividend income above your Β£500 dividend allowance.
From 6 April 2026, the dividend tax rates increased to:
πΉ Basic Rate: 8.75% β 10.75%
πΉ Higher Rate: 33.75% β 35.75%
πΉ Additional Rate: 39.35% (unchanged)
For many company directors who rely on a salary and dividend strategy, this means a larger personal tax bill and reduced take-home income.
π‘ For every Β£10,000 of taxable dividends, a basic-rate taxpayer will now pay Β£1,075 in dividend tax instead of Β£875.
With Corporation Tax, Employer's National Insurance and Dividend Tax all increasing in recent years, reviewing your remuneration strategy has never been more important.
If you're unsure how these changes affect you, speak to your accountant before making any decisions about salary, dividends or pension contributions.
π’ Making Tax Digital is coming β are you ready?
From April 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax will begin to affect many sole traders and landlords.
If your qualifying self-employment and/or property income is over Β£50,000, you may need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software. The rules are then expected to extend to those over Β£30,000 from April 2027, and over Β£20,000 from April 2028.
This means now is the time to get prepared β especially if you still use spreadsheets, paper records, or only pull everything together once a year.
