From shoreline to living space. What begins as eelgrass naturally washed ashore on the Danish coast is transformed into acoustic materials that bring calm, comfort and natural tactility into architecture. In this summerhouse by , Søuld Acoustic Boards FR help create a balanced acoustic environment while complementing the warmth of the wood floors. The result is a home where natural materials, sound and architecture exist in harmony.”We did not want to compromise on the acoustics of the house. With Søuld, we were able to bring nature indoors and achieve high acoustic comfort, while the colours and textures of the wood and eelgrass complement each other beautifully.”Architect: : Søuld Acoustic Boards FRFloors: Photography: Søuld /

Every year, eelgrass follows the rhythm of nature.

Growing in shallow coastal waters, eelgrass meadows provide habitat for marine life, help stabilise sediments and contribute to healthy coastal ecosystems. As autumn storms arrive, the leaves naturally detach from the plant and drift ashore without human intervention.

At Søuld, we gently collect the freshly washed ashore eelgrass and dry it using only sun and wind. Through careful processing, this abundant natural material is transformed into high-performance acoustic products that preserve its unique texture, character and inherent qualities.

A material shaped by the sea. Reimagined for contemporary architecture.

Designed to support contemporary learning and collaboration, the newly renovated breakout spaces at Roskilde University offer students flexible environments for study, discussion and knowledge-sharing.

Throughout the interior, Søuld Acoustic Mats made from eelgrass help create a balanced acoustic environment where multiple groups can work and exchange ideas simultaneously. The combination of natural wood and eelgrass introduces warmth, tactility and material depth, while rhythmic wooden elements and the soft texture of the eelgrass panels contribute to a calm and welcoming atmosphere.

The result is a series of welcoming learning environments where openness, flexibility and acoustic comfort come together to support both focused work and informal interaction.

For centuries, eelgrass has demonstrated remarkable qualities.

Along the coastlines of Denmark, it has been used to create roofs capable of lasting for hundreds of years. Naturally resistant to moisture, mould and fire, eelgrass is a material shaped by the conditions of the sea.

Today, we continue to explore its potential in contemporary construction.
One of the qualities that makes eelgrass particularly interesting is its ability to bind and store carbon. Through our third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), we can document that our acoustic panels store more carbon than is emitted during raw material sourcing, transport and manufacturing (A1–A3). For full EPD, visit sould.dk

At Søuld, transparency matters. We provide architects, designers and clients with reliable, independently verified data about our products’ environmental performance.

Natural materials can play an important role in the transition towards lower-impact construction. But only when their environmental performance is measured, verified and openly shared.

Alongside our Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute® Gold certification, our EPD forms part of Søuld’s commitment to transparency and documentation.

Designed by Signe Hytte for COMPOSED MATTER, STOA explores the relationship between structure, rhythm and materiality.

Inspired by the classical Greek colonnade, the collection combines integrated Søuld eelgrass panels with brushed aluminium surfaces. The contrast between soft, tactile eelgrass and refined metal creates a balanced expression where warmth and precision coexist.

By carving grooves into the eelgrass panels, the material becomes flexible enough to bend into soft, rounded forms. This technique makes it possible to create the curved geometry beneath the tabletops, transforming a flat acoustic panel into a sculptural element while highlighting the versatility of the material.

The collection includes a coffee table, square coffee table, console table and pedestal table — each conceived as a study in repetition, proportion and quiet presence.

At Søuld, we collaborate with our community of local farmers, municipalities and ecologists to ensure responsible eelgrass collection that safeguards ecosystems and preserves the local eelgrass meadows. After being collected from the shore, the eelgrass is dried by the sun and wind on nearby hayfields. Utilising this natural drying process instead of energy-intensive technology is a key component in maintaining the low CO2 footprint of Søuld’s production.

Founded by furniture designers and cabinet makers, Vermland brings together traditional woodworking expertise and contemporary design. Their new showroom in Copenhagen reflects a simple philosophy: interiors should be built to last and designed to be lived in.

Integrated throughout the space, Søuld Acoustic Dividers sit naturally among crafted wooden cabinets, furniture and interior elements. The combination of wood and eelgrass creates a cohesive material palette defined by warmth, tactility and natural variation.

Beyond helping to define space within the open showroom, the dividers contribute Acoustic Class A performance, creating a calmer and more comfortable environment for conversations, work and everyday use.

Wood and eelgrass share a natural honesty. Both materials evolve over time, developing character through subtle shifts in tone, texture and patina. Together, they create a welcoming environment where materiality, functionality and acoustic comfort are carefully balanced.

Working with natural materials should feel intuitive — also when it comes to shaping them to fit a space.

Søuld Acoustic Panels, made from eelgrass gently collected along Danish coastlines, are developed to be both high-performing and easy to work with. Available in a range of standard sizes and thicknesses, they can also be custom cut to meet specific project requirements — from simple adjustments to more defined geometries.

The material itself is soft, porous and adaptable. Panels can be processed using common woodworking tools such as circular saws, or more advanced techniques like waterjet cutting and stamping when precision or repetition is needed. This flexibility allows the material to move naturally between architectural surfaces and more detailed design applications.

Søuld’s eelgrass products embody a reinvention of a 400-year-old Danish tradition. Originating on Læsø, a landscape with limited resources where eelgrass flourished due to the high salt content in the sea, locals developed an ingenious building method. Women turned to the salty seashores to collect the abundant eelgrass plant encircling the island and wove the eelgrass into durable, fireproof and insulating roofs.

Today, Søuld focuses on enhancing and modernising eelgrass as an acoustic material through innovative technology, while preserving an important aspect of Danish cultural heritage. Søuld is dedicated to reintroducing this remarkable yet overlooked material at a time when low-carbon building solutions are crucial for environmental preservation.
