While the US labour market report was relatively robust, markets expect the Fed’s decision to be largely based on this week’s inflation report. The Bank of Canada held its benchmark interest rate at 2.25%, citing ongoing trade uncertainty and inflation risks. As CIBC Chief Economist Avery Shenfeld noted, it was no surprise the Bank left its key rate unchanged “amidst the fog of a trade war.”

The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades Economic data The month of September has arrived, but the sun keeps shining on the US economy. The week opened with the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing and services surveys both signaling healthy expansion, at 54.
Statistics Canada reported Canada’s merchandise trade surplus narrowed sharply in July as exports declined for the first time in six months, while imports increased. Particularly notable amongst the data was a significant drop in exports to the US.
This drop came in July, just before trade tensions escalated between the two countries, leading to more tariffs.

At its September meeting, the Bank of Canada (BoC) held its benchmark overnight interest rate steady. Inflation remains elevated and above target.
However, inflationary pressures still appear to be largely contained to energy prices, and have not spilled over to other products, as evidenced by core inflation near the BoC’s 2% target. But the BoC did acknowledge that global developments have raised the upside risks to inflation. Here’s more from yesterday’s interest rate decision.
S&P Global reported that Canada’s manufacturing sector expanded for a fifth straight month in August, albeit at a slightly slower pace than in July. Canada’s manufacturing sector has improved in 2026 compared to 2025, suggesting manufacturers and businesses have adapted to trade disruptions with the US.
However, the outlook is now clouded after fresh Canada-US trade tensions reemerged in late August.
