Esti, or Esther, is a fourteen-year-old, Jewish girl who lives in Toronto and who has been missing since last Friday.

She was seen last at midnight (12:01 AM) last Saturday, May 16th, in the Bathurst Street and Hotspur Road area.

Esti is 5’2” tall, medium build, and has brown hair.

She was last seen wearing a turquoise sweater with words on the front or a green tshirt, grey sweat pants, no shoes, hair in a ponytail.

Esti’s ima, Shira, described her daughter as kind, intelligent, and able to make friends wherever she goes.

Shira has requested the support of her community — the Toronto Jewish community — by checking personal security camera footage in the area where she was last seen for any clues.

I’m pretty all or nothing… one extreme or the other - I don’t do balance so well.

Before October 7th, I would say I was incredibly naive and was at the “all” end of the spectrum.

I loved going out and engaging with strangers, I believed most people were good, I gave people the benefit of the doubt, even when others might have labelled them as “bad” or “undeserving.”

Then October 7th happened, and my life, like many of ours, completely changed in a heart beat.

Safety didn’t just go out the window, it flew out the window. Along with a lot of other things.

I went from loving people and the world to kind of hating them.

And for a while, after October 7th, I missed my “old” self… the open, unguarded, naive me.

Interestingly, over time, I have since developed a huge sense of gratitude for the “new me.”

I’ve had to realize and accept that the old me didn’t die; she just got smarter. The softer version of me is still in here, under the layers of vigilance, keeping my core soft. But she doesn’t run the show anymore. She’s has boundaries and is no longer allowed to open the front door to just any and everyone.

She is protecting me because she knows that not everyone is a safe person. That has been made crystal clear over the last few years.

I used to think being strong meant absorbing everything and still choosing “love and light.” Now I see what a joke that was. Now I’ve discovered that being strong means knowing exactly when to close the gates.

So, I’ll continue to live in my fortress with the drawbridge up, and will be selective with when to lower it.

Protect yourself. Guard your heart.
