Have more than one business?

It’s easy to assume that each business has its own $30,000 GST/HST small supplier threshold — but that isn’t always the case.

If you operate multiple businesses as a sole proprietor, the taxable revenues from those businesses are combined when determining whether you’ve exceeded the threshold.

Corporations are separate entities, but there’s an important catch there too: associated corporations must consider their combined taxable revenues when determining small supplier status.

It’s one of those GST/HST rules that can easily catch a business owner by surprise.

BC is adding PST to accounting services

A heads-up for our BC clients: effective October 1, 2026, the BC government is expanding PST to accounting services.

This means 7% PST will apply to taxable accounting and bookkeeping services, in addition to the 5% GST already charged.

This is not an increase to Busy Beans’ fees. We’ll simply be required to collect the PST and remit it to the Province of British Columbia.

The new rules apply to a broad range of services, including bookkeeping, tax preparation, payroll accounting, account reconciliation, financial and management accounting, tax advice and more.

What do you need to do? Nothing! We’ll take care of the necessary changes on our end, and applicable PST will begin appearing on invoices in accordance with the new rules.

We wanted to give everyone some advance notice so there are no surprises when you see the additional 7% next month.

Questions? As always, just reach out. We’re happy to help.

Spreadsheets can work just fine when your business is small.

But as your business grows, so does everything you need to keep track of — more transactions, more expenses, more customers, more tax obligations, and a lot more opportunity for things to get missed.

At some point, the spreadsheet that used to make things simple can start making your bookkeeping harder than it needs to be.

Good accounting software can help keep your records organized, simplify reconciliations, track what you owe and what’s owed to you, and give you a much clearer picture of how your business is actually doing.

Not sure whether it’s time to make the switch? Reach out to Busy Beans Accounting.

A contract doesn’t decide whether someone is a contractor.

You can have a signed agreement that says “independent contractor” in big bold letters — and CRA can still determine that person is actually an employee.

Why? Because worker classification is based on the actual working relationship, not just what you decided to call it.

And getting it wrong can be expensive. A business may end up responsible for CPP and EI that should have been remitted — including both the employee and employer portions — plus interest and penalties.

If you use independent contractors in your business, make sure the relationship actually supports that classification.

Not sure? Don’t guess.

Sometimes the cheapest bookkeeping is the most expensive bookkeeping.

We've taken over plenty of files where the business owner thought they were saving money — until they discovered how much work was required to fix the books afterward.

And I'm not saying you need to hire the most expensive bookkeeper you can find.

I'm saying price shouldn't be the only thing you look at.

Ask about experience. Ask about processes. Ask whether the work is reviewed. Ask how they handle things they aren't sure about. Ask what happens at year-end.

Because paying someone to enter transactions incorrectly isn't much of a bargain when you eventually have to pay someone else to straighten everything out.

Once for the cheap option.
And once for me to fix it. 😂

How long has it been since you looked at your books? 👀

A week? A month? Six months?

Bookkeeping is one of those things that’s very easy to put off when you’re busy actually running your business.

Then suddenly it’s year-end and you’re trying to remember what that $487 charge from eight months ago was for. 😂

The good news? Your books don’t have to be perfect.

But keeping them current, separating business and personal expenses, and knowing when it’s time to ask for help can save you a whole lot of time, money and frustration later.

And if things have already gotten a little messy, we can help with that too. We actually like cleaning up messy books. (Yes, we're weird.)

Swipe through for three bookkeeping mistakes we see all the time. 👉

Better books. Better decisions.

When bookkeeping starts to feel messy, it’s rarely because of one big issue.

It’s usually a series of small things — transactions handled a little differently, things missed here and there, or no consistent way of doing it over time.

Those small things add up, and eventually the numbers just don’t feel clear anymore.

This is something we see all the time — and it’s absolutely fixable once there’s consistency again.

If your books feel like they’ve gotten off track, I’m always happy to take a look and help you figure out what’s going on.

Most business owners don’t fall behind on purpose.

It usually happens gradually — while you’re focused on running your business and trying to keep everything moving.

Bookkeeping gets pushed aside, things start to feel unclear, and before you know it, you’re behind.

It’s not a lack of effort. It’s just a lot to manage.

The good news is, this is very fixable with the right process.

If you’re not sure where things stand, I’m always happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.
