Self-employed or incorporated? The right choice could change how much of your income you actually keep. πΌπ¨π¦
Being self-employed is easier and less expensive to manage, but your income is generally taxed personally, you cover both portions of CPP, and your personal assets may have greater exposure.
Incorporation can offer liability protection, tax-deferral opportunities, and more flexibility around salary and dividends. However, it also brings additional bookkeeping, corporate filings, compliance requirements, and accounting costs.
Incorporation may make sense when:
β You earn more than you need for personal expenses
β Your income is stable and predictable
β You want stronger liability protection
β You plan to grow or eventually sell the business
β You want more flexibility in managing compensation
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best structure depends on your income, expenses, goals, family situation, and how much money you intend to leave inside the business.
