Canada's retaliatory counter tariffs went into effect today at 12:01am. While we all knew it was coming, the bigger question immediately is what items are subject to the increase. The Government of Canada has published a comprehensive list of all items covered by the tariff so we can expect to see price increases accordingly on these products. Effective September 8, 2026, Canada will impose 15, 25, and 50 per cent tariffs on products drawn from those targeted by U.S. Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs, with individual product rates based on the matching U.S. rate for the same goods.

All eyes will be on the Big 6 Canadian banks this week as they release their 3rd Quarter profits. Scotia and BMO were out of the gate today with TD, CIBC, RBC and National Bank all scheduled to release their numbers on Thursday. BNS and BMO both reported increases from the same period in 2025 and we will know more on Thursday if the trend continues.

As we all know, this weekend trade talks broke down between Canada and the US leaving a huge uncertainty as to what comes next. At this point it is wait and see time for what the next steps might be. Looking for something fun to do after a long week? Personal insolvencies in Canada are at levels not seen since the 2008 financial crisis according to a new release by the Office of the Superintendent pf Bankruptcies. Numbers released this week report over 13,000 bankruptcy filings in June, up 5.7% compared with May and a whopping 11.5% over June 2025.
