The Canada Training Credit (CTC) is a refundable tax credit designed to help eligible workers offset the costs of tuition and other training fees. Starting in 2019, eligible Canadians began accumulating $250 per year in a "notional account," which can be used to cover up to 50% of eligible tuition and fees paid during a tax year.
Key Features and Limits
Annual Accumulation: You earn $250 each year you meet the eligibility criteria, regardless of whether you take a course that year.
Lifetime Limit: The maximum amount you can accumulate over your lifetime is $5,000.
Maximum 2025/2026 Balance: Since accumulation began in 2019, the maximum potential balance for the 2025 tax year is $1,000.
Eligibility Requirements
To accumulate the $250 annual credit, you must meet several conditions in the previous year:
Age: You must be at least 26 years old and under 66 years old at the end of the year.
Residency: You must be a resident of Canada throughout the year.
Income: For the 2025 tax year, you must have earned at least $10,994 in working income (including maternity/parental benefits) and have a total net income below $165,430.
Tax Filing: You must file an income tax and benefit return for the year.
How to Claim the Credit
Check Your Limit: Your current Canada Training Credit Limit (CTCL) is listed on your most recent Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Eligible Tuition and Fees (What You CAN Claim)
Tuition Fees: Academic fees for courses at post-secondary institutions.
Mandatory Fees: Fees for library, laboratory, computer services, and specific health/athletic services that all students must pay.
Application/Examination Fees: Fees for applying, taking exams for professional certification, or receiving a diploma/degree.
Specific Training: Fees for developing or improving occupational skills (even if not at a post-secondary level).
Foreign Schools: Fees paid to universities outside Canada if you were in full-time attendance for a program lasting at least three consecutive weeks, or to a US school (if commuting).
Ineligible Fees (What You CANNOT Claim)
Extracurricular student social activities.
Medical expenses.
Transportation and parking.
Board and lodging.
Goods of enduring value (e.g., a laptop purchased for a program).
Fees paid by an employer (if not included in your income).
