🏋️‍♀️ MYTH BUSTED: “You can deduct your gym membership, personal trainer, or your kids’ fitness activities on your taxes.”

This is one of the most common tax myths we hear—and it’s based on an old tax credit that no longer exists!

Here’s the truth:
❌ Personal training and gym memberships are generally not tax deductible for most Canadians.
❌ The federal Children’s Fitness Tax Credit (often called the “Harper-era fitness tax credit”) was eliminated after the 2016 tax year, so you can no longer claim your child’s hockey, gymnastics, swimming, dance, or other fitness programs on your federal tax return.

⚠️ There are exceptions. Some provinces and territories still offer their own fitness-related tax credits, and certain fitness or rehabilitation expenses may qualify if they meet specific medical or other tax rules. Your eligibility depends on where you live and your individual circumstances.

💡 Tax rules change over time, which is why advice from years ago may no longer apply today.

Before assuming an expense is deductible, it’s worth checking with a tax professional—you could avoid a costly mistake or uncover credits you didn’t know you qualified for.
