What does it really take to retire well? David Chilton, author of The Wealthy Barber, is about to find out firsthand. After decades of helping Canadians plan for the future, he's entering retirement himself.

In a recent episode of The Hart of It All, he talks with Teri Hart about what those years really require. He shares his family's experience navigating his 93-year-old father's dementia and long-term care, and why so many Canadians assume the government will fully cover future care costs.

The conversation reinforces something I discuss with clients often: longevity planning matters. A longer life means planning for the longer run, with a focus on financial, physical, cognitive, and social wellness, along with honest family conversations before a crisis forces rushed decisions.

Thinking of everyone in British Columbia affected by the wildfires, especially the communities of Summerland and Vernon and the surrounding areas, who are facing evacuations and uncertainty right now. Our thoughts are with those displaced from their homes and the first responders working tirelessly to keep people safe.

At RBC Wealth Management, supporting resilient communities is core to how we work. We are contributing directly to relief efforts in the impacted communities, through donations to BC Search and Rescue Association, WRA Wildlife Rescue, Community Foundation of the South Okanagan/Similkameen, as well as numerous foodbanks across the Okanagan valley. In addition, our employee donation matching program amplifies the impact we can make together when communities need it most.

RBC also recently renewed its support for The Canadian Red Cross to help them better prepare for and respond to disasters across Canada.

As conditions evolve, we remain committed to standing with these communities through immediate relief and long-term recovery.

Financial planning has always been about preparing for the future. But as people live longer, that future is becoming more complex. Today’s retirees may spend 25, 30, or even 40 years in retirement. Along the way, questions about health, caregiving, housing, purpose, cognitive well-being and family support can become just as important as financial considerations.

That’s why I incorporate longevity planning into my approach, with a focus on financial, physical, cognitive and social wellness.

The goal is to help you make more informed decisions, anticipate potential challenges, and create a plan that supports both wealth and well-being. Just as I collaborate with specialists across tax, estate, and trust planning, I also have access to longevity-planning expertise and resources to help you navigate the evolving realities of longer lives.

Successful planning isn’t just about how long your money lasts; it’s about helping ensure your life, health, relationships, and purpose are considered along the way.

If you’re thinking about what longevity could mean for you, your family, or your retirement plans, please reach out. I welcome the conversation.
