A financial plan is not one account, one investment or one decision.

It is a collection of connected pieces:

Your goals.
Your cash flow.
Your investments.
Your taxes.
Your insurance.
Your estate wishes.
And the way all of those pieces change as your life changes.

One piece can look perfectly reasonable on its own and still fail to support the bigger picture.

That is why good planning starts by stepping back and asking:

If the math ain't mathing, there's probably something going on.

Maybe it's the RRSP room you're not using. Maybe it's CPP timing that doesn't add up. Maybe it's just a feeling that things should be further along than they are. Whatever it is, it's usually fixable once someone actually looks at it.

That's what I do. We dig in, figure out what's actually going on, and find the answers and the moves that make sense for you.

This is the RESP. One piece of a much bigger picture.

If you've got kids and you haven't started thinking about how school gets paid for down the road, this is where I'd start. The government matches a chunk of what you put in every year, so it's one of the easiest pieces of a financial plan to justify. But it only works if it's actually part of the plan, not just an account you opened once and forgot about.

It's one block. But it holds up a lot.

🧡 Spent the weekend out of town for Inclusion Alberta executive meetings.

I've been part of their executive for a while now, and I love it.

Inclusion Alberta is a non-profit that's been around for over 60 years, advocating for kids and adults with intellectual disabilities and the families behind them. Their work covers a lot of ground: helping kids get a real, inclusive education instead of being pushed to the side, helping adults find actual paid employment instead of just volunteer placements, building inclusive recreation and sport programs so people aren't left out of community life, and standing beside families who are navigating a system that isn't always built for them.

It's not a group that makes noise. It's a group that gets results, one family and one kid at a time.

Always worth the drive.

Watching this space come together has been something else. Every detail, every wall colour, every layout decision, that's all Jayne. My wife, our designer, and honestly the reason this place doesn't look like every other office on the block.

Morgan and I keep catching ourselves standing in the middle of it just taking it in. It's starting to feel like exactly what we hoped: a place where people can come talk about their money and feel good about it. A place that feels like it belongs in Medicine Hat.

A financial plan isn't one big decision. It's a lot of small pieces stacked together, RRSP, TFSA, insurance, CPP timing, debt strategy, all of it working together.

Miss one piece and the rest gets shaky. Ignore enough of them and eventually something gives.

This is why a real plan looks at all the pieces at once, not just the one that's stressing you out this month.
