As many of my followers know, I have written frequently about the essential unpredictability of the markets. I have referred to them as a complex adaptive system, which roughly means that – unlike the internal combustion engine, for example – their individual parts do not bear an orderly, internally dependent relationship with one another to work.

Another way of putting it is to think of the markets as a body of water, sometimes calm, often turbulent, through which we as passengers on a yacht, make our way. Yachts have guardrails, protective boundaries designed to keep passengers within safe, acceptable, and responsible limits during a voyage. Guardrails in investing is the subject of this blog.
