Accounts Receivable (A/R) is money customers owe your business for products or services you’ve already provided.

Accounts Payable (A/P) is money your business owes vendors and suppliers for bills you haven’t paid yet.

Why should you pay attention to both?

Because overdue invoices can hurt your cash flow, while unpaid bills can lead to late fees and strained vendor relationships.

Review your A/R and A/P regularly so you know what needs to be collected and what needs to be paid.

You should start paying attention to your cash flow now, NOT when you’re struggling to cover expenses.

Here are the money conversations you should be having with yourself, your CFO, or your bookkeeper:

- How much cash is actually coming in each month?

- What large expenses are coming up?

- How much is sitting in unpaid invoices?

- Can we comfortably cover payroll, taxes, and other bills?

- Which expenses are increasing?

- Do we have enough cash set aside for slower months?

- What does our cash flow look like for the next 30, 60, and 90 days?

Good cash flow management starts with knowing what’s coming before it happens.

There are two main ways a business can cross the $30,000 small supplier threshold:

1. Single calendar quarter: If you make more than $30,000 in taxable sales in one quarter, you exceed the threshold right away.

2. Four consecutive calendar quarters: If your combined taxable sales exceed $30,000 across four consecutive quarters, you also exceed the threshold, even if no individual quarter was over $30,000.
