This is a REAL conversation I've had with a client.
And it's exactly why I say that accounting isn't just about knowing the tax rules. It's about understanding how your business actually operates.

A lemon could be inventory, a styling expense, a photography prop, a client amenity or simply your groceries.

Same $2 lemon. Five completely different situations.
The difference? Business purpose, context and documentation.

October 5th was supposed to be my first day back to work… but I changed the plan.

If this season has taught me anything, it’s that balance isn’t about doing it all. Sometimes it’s about knowing when you need more time — and actually giving yourself permission to take it.

So I’m taking the rest of 2026 at my own pace. Working behind the scenes, showing up where I’m needed, but making more room for my family and myself.

We talk a lot about investing back into your business, but that doesn’t always mean another big purchase.

Sometimes it’s fixing the truck before it becomes a bigger problem. Servicing the equipment so it lasts another five years. Or maintaining your building instead of waiting for something to break.

That’s R&M — and it’s one of those categories that can quietly add up throughout the year.

HOW are we already entering the FINAL quarter of 2026?!
October 1 means you officially have 3 months left to make strategic tax moves before the year is over.

And no - tax planning doesn’t start when you file your return.

By now, your bookkeeping should be up to date enough that you have a pretty good idea of:
What your income will look like for the year.
Where your profit is going to land.
And most importantly — what you’re going to do with it.
Because if your business is having a profitable year, now is the time to decide where that money should go.

Do you need to invest in equipment?
Technology or software?
Marketing?
Education?
Staff?
Professional services?
Something that will help you grow in 2027?

The goal isn’t to spend money just to “get a write-off.”

My heart wants to be a stay-at-home mom. 🤍

My brain wants to build a million-dollar business, create something bigger than myself, chase every crazy idea I have and see just how far I can take it.

And somehow… I want both.

I want slow mornings, school drop-offs, babies on my hip, pool days and summers with my kids.

But I also want big goals, a growing team, new ideas, investments, impact and a business that makes me ridiculously proud.

Maybe that’s why I built Balance in the first place.

Not because I wanted to choose between motherhood and entrepreneurship…

But because I wanted to create a life where I could be wildly ambitious and incredibly present.

Some seasons lean more mom.
Some seasons lean more CEO.

When I became an entrepreneur, one of the biggest lessons I learned was that asking for help isn't an expense- it's an investment.

For years I tried to do it all.
Run the business.
Raise the kids.
Keep the house together.

The reality? I couldn't grow my business the way I wanted while trying to be everything to everyone.

That's why we hired a part-time house manager/nanny. She cares for our kids while I work, she's on payroll, and the arrangement allows me to be fully present in both my business and with my family.

This summer we'll also have Sophia in a sailing day camp and Ashton in part-time daycare.

These are examples of child care expenses that may qualify for the Child Care Expense Deduction.

One misconception I hear all the time is, "My kids play hockey/dance/soccer, so I can write that off."

Unfortunately, that's generally not the case. Ontario's children's activity tax credit was eliminated years ago, and recreational sports fees typically aren't deductible on your personal tax return.

The tax rules aren't always intuitive, which is why having a strategy matters.

The goal isn't to claim everything.
The goal is to claim everything you're legitimately entitled to.

Like most tax write-offs, it comes down to why you have the expense and how it helps you earn income.

A family pet? Personal.
A legitimate working dog? That can be a different story.
