A special visit to the City of Brampton today as we welcomed a distinguished delegation from Portugal at the historic Alderlea House. 🇨🇦🇵🇹

We were honoured to host Dr. Pedro Nascimento Cabral, President of the Câmara Municipal de Ponta Delgada and Dr. Jaime Vieira, President of the Câmara Municipal da Ribeira Grande and other dignitaries.

Brampton’s Portuguese and Azorean community has helped shape our city’s story through culture, family, entrepreneurship and community spirit. Today’s visit was an opportunity to celebrate those connections while strengthening relationships with leaders from Portugal and the Azores.

Proud to attend the launch of the Black Health and Social Services (BHSS) Hub here in Brampton. This is an important step forward in creating more accessible, culturally responsive health and social services for Black communities across our city.

The BHSS Hub brings together vital supports, resources and services under one roof, helping address barriers and connect residents with the care they need. Congratulations to everyone who helped bring this vision to life; partnerships like these strengthen our community and help build a healthier, more inclusive Brampton.

I am very pleased to hear the news that the City of Vaughan is receiving nearly $700 million from the provincial and federal governments which will make the widening of this bridge possible.

This bridge is located on Highway 7 and has been a technical limitation to our plans to build a future Queen Street BRT in Brampton which connects us to Vaughan.

Now, by allocating monies to widen the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Rail Bridge to accommodate the widening of Highway 7 to eight lanes, BRT across Queen Street and Hwy 7 will become possible with our continued advocacy and work on the project!

The Region of Peel will continue to have a voice on the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Board of Directors, with Regional Councillor Paul Vicente returning for the 2026-2028 term as a representative for the Regional and Single Tier Caucus.

Through this role, Brampton’s perspective remains part of province-wide municipal discussions on the pressures facing growing communities. The work focuses on priorities residents experience every day, including housing, transit and infrastructure, community safety and the provincial support needed to respond to Brampton’s growth.

As one of the fastest-growing of Canada’s big cities and third-largest city in Ontario, Brampton is also advocating at the 2026 AMO Conference for investments and support in transit and mobility, housing, health care and community safety and well-being.

Privileged to represent the Region of Peel as a Member of the Board of Directors, Regional and Single-Tier Caucus at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario for the past 6 years.

Under this AMO Board...

• Homelessness research impact - AMO, NOSDA, and OMSSA produced Ontario’s most-used homelessness dataset, downloaded thousands of times and shaping federal-provincial commitments to renegotiate the National Housing Strategy beyond 2028.

• Advocacy on municipal fiscal reform -AMO highlighted that municipalities fund 80% of public infrastructure, face $250B in upcoming capital work, and absorbed 86% construction cost increases in six years.

• Bill 9 passage - Advanced safer, more respectful local government through conduct-related reforms Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan launched - Introduced AMO’s first three-year plan focused on training, resources, relationships, and stronger municipal leadership.

• Toronto rejoined AMO and nelp us restore full sector unity: 444 municipalities at the table.

• Asserted municipalities’ role as democratically elected governments, not administrative arms of the Province.

• Continued investment in helping Ontarians understand municipal government and supporting candidates and elected officials with the Healthy Democracy Project.

I am in Ottawa today for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario Conference.

I represent Peel Region as a Member of the Board for AMO and we are here to advocate on behalf the Region of Peel and the City of Brampton, together with the City of Mississauga and Town of Caledon.

We are advocating for our residents to ensure we have the funding and resources to build the infrastructure, spaces and places that make our communities safe, productive, prosperous and enjoyable.

AMO is more than a conference; it’s an opportunity to make sure Brampton and Peel’s voice is heard where decisions are made. Fun fact: AMO brings together nearly 3,000 delegates from Ontario’s 444 municipalities, making it one of the largest gatherings of municipal leaders in the province! Proud to bring these conversations home and keep advocating for results for our community.

Construction crews have hit a milestone in the Peel Manor redevelopment that will bring nearly 200 new senior’s living units to Brampton, and will be the first-of-its-kind “mass timber” buildings in the city.

The project is called the Basswood Senior Residences, and will be the city’s first mass-timber construction – a type of sustainable build that uses large, engineered wood structure for its primary structural elements. The process of binding solid wood boards together to make walls, floors, columns and other design elements is more environmentally friendly and fire-resistant compared to traditional plywood construction.

In Brampton, the Basswood Senior Residences are a hybrid structure with the first story in concrete and the remaining eight residential stories constructed using timber.

Once completed, the 148,000 square foot development will add affordable housing units for 198 seniors, with some 44 per cent of the units being fully wheel-chair and barrier-free accessible, and include pull-under cook tops and sinks, accessible millwork, turning circles, and transfer spaces.

“Designed with ambitious Net Zero Emissions and Zero Carbon Building targets, the residence features a geothermal system, mass timber structure, and prefabricated building envelope,” designers Kasian Architecture say of the Basswood Senior Residences.

The region says recent milestones on the development include completion of the mass timber structure through the eight floor and completion of the panelized building envelope up to the seventh floor.

No opening date for the new residences have been disclosed by the Region.

“This project reflects Peel Region’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of seniors,” said Nancy Polsinelli, commissioner of Health Services for Peel Region. “By creating affordable homes for our growing senior population in our dedicated Seniors Health and Wellness Village, Basswood Senior Residences will help older adults age with access to care, community, and vital support.”

The old Peel Manor Seniors Rental Building was approved for demolition by the Region of Peel in 2019, and the region has since opened the Seniors Health and Wellness Village with 177 long-term care beds.
