“I left Bhutan for college since I loved accounting and investments. I got a double major in accounting and finance from Pacific Lutheran University in Washington State, USA. Being torn about my career path between accounting and investment, I was recruited out of college by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in their Seattle office to work in their assurance (audit). It was the best of both worlds for me, so I started with PwC right after graduation in 2007.

After a few years at PwC where I primarily worked with banks, venture capital funds and with exposure to biotech, energy, and technology companies. After PwC, I went to Benchmark Plus, a fund of fund and then was introduced to Tola Capital, a venture capital firm investing primarily in enterprise software. I was recruited by Tola as their Chief Financial Officer which marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Mid-2017, my family and I decided to move to Bhutan for a few years. My mother had been battling cancer and we wanted to be close to her. After moving to Bhutan, we noticed a real shortage of accounting and finance professionals in the country which was not due to lack of talent but because of the lack of opportunity or incentives for people to go into accounting or finance. Most business graduates were employed by government or the private sector in areas completely different from their educational background in addition to a high rate of college graduates in the unemployment pool. Meanwhile, the market had a real need of professional accounting and finance work.

Given the limited number of Bhutanese professionals in the market, foreign firms were brought in to meet the needs. Which is why my husband and I decided to establish an accounting and consulting firm dedicated to hiring young talent and grooming them to become finance professionals servicing the local market. I am proud that Rinzing Financial Private Limited is an empanelled firm with the Royal Audit Authority, engaging in numerous audit and consulting work including some high-profile companies. I am back in the US now as CFO of Tola Capital again but I still oversee RFPL in Bhutan.”

With the invitation from the Royal Audit Authority, Supreme Audit Institution of Bhutan (RAA), Rinzing Financial Private Limited and other auditing firms in Bhutan participated audit planning workshop and training. This enriching five-day program took place from August 21st to August 25th, 2023, at the esteemed Royal Audit Authority’s Professional Development Centre, Tsirang

Here are some key highlights from this valuable workshop and training experience:

a) During the event, audit firms were tasked with presenting their audit plans, which were meticulously crafted in accordance with the International Standards of Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAI). This exercise ensured our commitment to adhering to globally recognized best practices in auditing.

b) Audit firms had the opportunity to showcase their audit workpapers, providing a platform for collective evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of our audit documentation. This peer review process aimed to enhance the overall rigor and precision of our auditing practices.

c) Notably, the workshop facilitated productive knowledge exchange, as the quality review teams from RAA and fellow audit firms openly shared insights and perspectives on each other's audit planning, testing procedures, and documentation. This collaborative environment encouraged constructive feedback and promoted continuous improvement in our audit methodologies.

Participating in such forums not only reinforces our dedication to maintaining the highest standards in auditing but also highlights our commitment to ongoing professional development. We are grateful to RAA for extending this invitation and look forward to continuing our journey of excellence in the field of auditing.
