Big changes are coming to Australian payments. The RBA is banning card fees on Visa, Mastercard, eftpos, and Amex starting October 1, 2026.

Here is what it means for you:

For Shoppers 🛒
What you see is what you pay: No more surprise 1.5%–2% fees added when you tap your card or phone.

Simpler prices: Displayed prices will be the true final cost (though holiday & delivery fees still apply).

For Business Owners 💼
Update your terminals: Disable automatic surcharge settings before Oct 1.

Lower merchant fees: The RBA has capped interchange fees, meaning processing costs from banks are dropping to help offset the change.

Update signage: Remove any counter signs or disclaimers mentioning card surcharges.

💡 Quick Tip: Reach out to your provider (Square, Tyro, Stripe, or your bank) now to check how your terminal settings will update automatically!

A lot of small business owners and side-hustlers assume that if they're under the threshold, tax just isn't a "them" problem yet. But the ATO still expects that income to be declared and recorded, even if you end up paying $0 in tax on it.

Small income still means real records. Staying on top of it from day one saves you the scramble (and the stress) come tax time. 📝

Heads up! The $1,000 instant tax deduction is NOT for this year's return
You may have seen headlines about a new $1,000 instant work-related deduction with no receipts needed.

It's real. But it doesn't apply to your 2025-26 tax return.

The standard deduction for work-related expenses of up to $1,000 commences on 1 July 2026 and applies to the 2026-27 individual tax return - not the current one.

This year - keep your receipts. Claim what you're entitled to. Do it properly.
Next year is a different story. 😊
