One of the most common misconceptions we hear at tax time is that a deduction automatically equals a refund to that amount, which is just not the case.

If you claim a $100 deduction you don’t get a $100 refund, your taxable income reduces by $100.

Deductions = Eligible expenses that reduce the income you pay tax on.

Refunds = Money paid back into your account IF you have paid more tax than you needed to.

Understanding what you can claim as a tax deduction can be confusing. But it’s important you only claim what you are eligible to. Even if you lodge through a tax agent, claiming a deduction is still your responsibility!

Here are three rules to follow when deciding what is an eligible deduction:

💸You paid for it yourself and weren’t already reimbursed
💸It’s directly related to your job
💸You have proof eg receipts

You may have received a large sum of money for a birthday, gift from a parent or even an inheritance.

But do you need to pay tax on this money?

The answer is no!

Regardless of the amount of money you received, it isn’t an income and you don’t have to declare it on your income statement when preparing your tax.

However ‼️‼️‼️ If that money goes on to make an income for you, e.g bank interest, then this will become part of your income that you need to declare.
