The true cost of late tax payments just went up. 💸
General Interest Charges (GIC) and Shortfall Interest Charges (SIC) incurred on tax debts are no longer tax-deductible.
Why this matters for your business:
In the past, claiming ATO interest as a deduction helped cushion the blow of late tax payments. Now, with zero tax relief, carrying unpaid BAS or income tax has become one of the most expensive ways to fund your cash flow.
3 steps you should take today:
• Clear high-cost tax debts: Prioritise paying down ATO balances to stop non-deductible interest compounding daily.
• Compare refinancing options: Commercial loans or business overdrafts might now be significantly cheaper, especially since commercial loan interest can still be tax-deductible.
• Review your ATO payment plans: Make sure your existing payment arrangements still make financial sense.

Are you a credit card lover, always looking to put every expense possible on your credit card to accumulate points? Be it an Amex, Visa or Mastercard? 🛑💰
Well you’ve just hit the jackpot!
From 1 October 2026 Australian businesses will be banned from on-charging customers who choose to pay with these more expensive payment methods.
Businesses will still need to pay Amex, Visa & Mastercard to offer these payment methods to you, so next time you buy something using your credit card, thank them for taking a 3% pay cut so you can pay less and the credit card companies can keep making the exact same super profits
And when inevitably these businesses increase their prices to make ends meet, you should then move on to thanking your fellow customers who pay using cash or debit card or internet banking, because they will then be the ones who are subsidising your expensive payment method choices.

Tax refund season has everyone feeling like a financial strategist... until the words "business expense" start getting thrown around. 😅
Just a reminder: wishing something is deductible doesn't make it deductible. When in doubt, check the rules before you claim.

🏠 Is your holiday rental property actually 100% tax deductible?
Under Taxation Ruling TR 2026/1, the ATO is strictly auditing holiday rental claims this season. 🔬
If your property was:
🏖️ Blocked out for your family during peak times (During summer for a beach house, or winter for a ski lodge)
📈 Listed at above-market rates where it sat vacant
🔑 Used by friends or family for free/discounted rates
❌ You cannot claim 100% of your interest, rates, or insurance. Expenses must be split on a strict "fair and reasonable" basis based on actual income-earning days.
To make matters tougher, the ATO’s data-matching programs now cross-reference online booking calendars directly against tax returns.
Let’s review your booking logs and calculate your exact numbers so your return is 100% watertight before we lodge! 📊

💼 Did you earn any gig economy or digital platform income? Don't let ATO data-matching catch you off guard.
Under expanded reporting laws—known as the Sharing Economy Reporting Regime (SERR)—digital platforms now share transaction data directly with the ATO.
The silver lining? 💡
You can claim legitimate business expenses to lower your taxable income. Platform fees, equipment depreciation, home office costs, and phone usage can all be offset against your earnings.
Don't let omitted platform income delay your return or trigger an ATO Audit. Let’s look over your platform summary records and make sure you’re claiming every dollar you’re entitled to!

⚠️ Clearing up the biggest tax confusion of 2026...
Heard about the new $1,000 standard work deduction? Let’s set the record straight: This does NOT apply to the tax return you are filing right now!
The Key Facts:
• Current Return (2026): Standard rules apply. You still need receipts for all work deductions over $300.
• Future Return (2027): The $1,000 flat deduction takes effect next financial year (claimed in Tax Time 2027).
Don't throw away receipts: If your actual expenses exceed $1,000, claiming actual costs with receipts will get you a bigger refund outcome.
Navigating shifting tax legislation requires precision. If you want to ensure your 2026 return is lodged accurately and yields the maximum legitimate outcome, our advisory team is here to help. Contact us now!
