💰 New year, new lodgments 💰

1 July means employees will soon be able to lodge their 2024 tax returns.

14 July is the due date for employers to finalise annual wages summaries for their employees.

Once all employment, business and investment income has been finalised, you can then prepare and lodge your 2024 tax return with any eligible tax deductions.

Today is 30 June which means it's new years eve for accountants, business owners and lovers of finance, tax and Microsoft Excel 🎉🎆

Like many do on 31 December, we also reflect on the year that was, the year to be and what must be done to make our goals a reality - just on a different day.

The last 12 months feel like 12 years or 12 minutes depending on how I look at them, but in that time I've established a strong team, set up 2 offices outside the home, refined systems and processes, embraced a mission I'm truly proud of and worked with the best client group I could ask for.

Outside of all the advice and spreadsheets, I learnt more about business and myself, and had a bit of fun too. Here's a few photos captured in the last 2 months for proof. I forgot about some of these 😂

For the foreseeable future, I'll focus on consistent ex*****on of what's working great, welcoming new clients, work-life balance and launching a 2nd business (more info to come). I'm so excited about all of this!

Thank you to everyone who's supported me or my business in any way. You allow me to do what I love: use my brain and my heart to make a difference for people I care about. Accounting and business has always been - and always will be - more than numbers for me.

Life beyond Excel and Xero 🌳🍂☀️⛰️

If you are an Australian income taxpayer, then now is a good time to start preparing for EOFY.

(DISCLAIMER: This post is general information and not advice. Please consult your advisor before acting).

𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙀𝙈𝙋𝙇𝙊𝙔𝙀𝙀𝙎

DOCUMENTATION
Start organising invoices, receipts and logbooks for submission to your tax agent and for retention (at least 5 years post-lodgment).

SUPER CONTRIBUTIONS
Utilise your contributions caps (e.g. remaining amount of this year's $27,500 concessional cap and/or unused caps from previous years) via salary sacrifice or personal contributions.

CHANGES TO TAX RATES
Tax rates reduce from 1 July 2024, meaning individuals will pay more tax in the 2024 financial year, so consider pre-paying future deductible expenses before 1 July 2024 to lower this year's tax.

𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘽𝙐𝙎𝙄𝙉𝙀𝙎𝙎𝙀𝙎

YEAR-TO-DATE POSITION
Review YTD and estimated annual profit to estimate tax payable, as well as forecasted cash flow to ensure you're able to meet ongoing tax and financial liabilities.

DEPRECIATING ASSETS
Decide on the need to acquire new assets and assess whether they can be written off in full or must be depreciated over time. Also review existing assets to determine if any need to be written off.

TIMING OF DEDUCTIONS
You must pay super, declare bonuses and write off bad debts by 30 June 2024 to claim a deduction for such expenses in the 2024 financial year.

TIMING OF CGT EVENTS
Disposal is usually per contract date, not settlement, so entering into a contract of sale before 30 June 2024 means the realised gain or loss will be assessed in the 2024 financial year.

REALISED LOSSES
Capital assets sold at a loss can be offset against net gains realised during the 2024 financial year.

DISTRIBUTIONS
When estimating your tax position, you will need to consider what is receivable from listed investments or related parties.

From 1 July 2024, the rate for calculating super guarantee contributions, or minimum super on gross wages and salaries, will increase to 11.5%.

It is recommended that:

BUSINESS OWNERS AND MANAGERS
Factor in the 0.5% increase to cash flow forecasts and profitability in advance.

EMPLOYEES
Check their first payslip after 1 July 2024 to ensure the correct rate of super is being earned/accrued, although the rate change should be automatic in employers’ payroll software.

Earlier this month - hold up - you all know I'm a man of specifics…

On Thursday 4 April 2024, I worked from my office at the Reserve Bank Building in Hobart C*D for the first time.

This was exciting and surreal, though not just because I was working from a brand new space.

A few hours in, I felt like a fish out of water while hammering away at technical work and having calls with clients (the usual).

So I stopped working to ask myself "why?"

I realised I was working in a corporate environment for the first time in almost two and a half years.

Courtesy of Excel, it was 2.44 years or 890 days or 127.14 weeks or 29.27 months to be exact.

C0V!D, nomadic living and a general preference to work from home lead to a long absence of what I'd previously come to know so well.

I'd gotten so used to home offices and favourite coffee spots that a "normal" office felt completely foreign.

In saying that, being back in an office building was refreshing, enjoyable and inspiring. It's a drastically different experience when you're running your own show around others doing their own thing too.

It also reminded me of the pitfalls of working from home long-term: feeling cooped up, lacking interaction and sometimes being distracted from both work and personal needs.

I still enjoy working from home though for its privacy, time management, ability to listen to music loudly and brew the best coffee every day.

As with just about anything, it's all about balance, and that's what my first day "back in the office" showed me.

In this new era of my business, I'm embracing a more balanced, hybrid working environment where I bounce between working from home, Sydney and Hobart.

It's allowing me to explore, connect, focus and retreat - either all in a day's work or one theme per day depending on what I need at the time!
