There's a new tax scam doing the rounds online. Here's what it looks like 👇

If you’re being asked by the ATO to click on a 'DocuSign' link to release your tax return – don’t. It's not us.

It’s a scam designed to steal your personal info to:

💰 Commit refund fraud
💰 Access your tax and super details
💰 Sell your identity to organised crime groups

We never use ‘DocuSign’ to finalise tax refunds. If you receive an email like this, here's what you need to do 👇

🍾 🍾 New financial year = new minimum award rates from 1 July!

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be posting new minimum pay rates for different awards in our ‘know your bare minimums’ series.

First up is the Hair and Beauty Award 💇‍♀️💅💆

The Hair and Beauty Award covers employers and employees in the hair and beauty industry, which includes hairdressers, barbers, beauty therapists, nail technicians, make-up artists and salon receptionists.

Check your employees wages to make sure you are paying the correct amounts from first full pay run after 1st July

Pay rates have changed. The National Minimum Wage increased to $915.90 per week or $24.10 per hour and all minimum award wages increased by 3.75% from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2024.

Be alert for scams at tax time…

The ATO has reported a surge in scams targeting personally identifiable information (PII), including myGov sign-in credentials, which grant access to ATO accounts and financial information. Last year, birthdates were the most common PII divulged to scammers, but they now seek far more valuable details.

Bookkeepers are vital in helping clients protect their PII. By educating clients on security practices and implementing secure data storage and access controls, bookkeepers can significantly reduce the risk of identity theft.

The real ATO will never send you an email with a link on it or an attachment to open

Advice for Business Owners

- Communicate to your people, outlining precisely what to expect from your HR or Payroll Department at tax time.
- Provide precise details as to what they will receive and warn them that there is a very high chance cybercriminals will be targeting them at tax time.
- Step your people through relevant, engaging, and ongoing security awareness training and allow them to test their knowledge with simulated phishing and other social engineering tests.
- Share the tips below with your employees, customers, vendors and suppliers, as cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility.

Advice for Employees (and everyone else)

- Ask your HR Department or Payroll when and how you will receive your Group Certificate.
- Only deal with the ATO or MyGov via official channels https://my.gov.au/ or https://www.ato.gov.au
- The real ATO will never send links in emails or SMS
- The real ATO will never request personal details like bank account details via email, SMS or voice mail.
- The real ATO will never ask you to pay for anything with gift cards, credit cards or cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin).
