Reporting season has just wrapped — and once again, the headline profit number didn't tell the whole story.
This year we saw companies post solid profits and still get punished by the market, and others surprise on the upside despite a soft top line. The difference almost always came down to three things: revenue quality, cash flow, and the guidance management gave for the year ahead.
Swipe through for our take on the season that was, and what it's telling us about the months ahead.

Over the years, Burrell has achieved a lot. With our rich history and decades of experience, we've built a reputation that speaks for itself but although we've been around a long time, our service and technology have moved with the times. Now supporting the next generation of investors, we see ourselves as a safe set of hands, one who can build your wealth with you.
It all started back in 1937, when our founder Harold Nettheim bought a seat on the Brisbane Stock Exchange for £300 - a honeymoon gift from his wife Marguerite. In 1957 we welcomed Tom Burrell as our accountant; he went on to become a partner and lead our firm for almost 50 years before passing the reins to his son Christopher, our current managing director.
Nearly 90 years on, we've grown into five offices across Queensland, 40+ staff, and $1.5B in client portfolios under our care. Same family, same values — we're backed by the experience of our past and ready for your future.

What Burrell is watching: Quality Businesses
What separates a good business from a great investment?
At Burrell, we're always looking beyond the headlines.
This week, we're focused on three characteristics that often define quality businesses:
✔️ Consistent earnings growth
✔️ Strong cash flow
✔️ Pricing power
While no business is immune to changing market conditions, companies with these characteristics are often better positioned to navigate different economic environments.
If you could only choose one quality when assessing a business, what would it be?

What Burrell is watching: Valuation
Would you rather buy an incredible business at the wrong price... or a good business at the right price?
It's a question investors face every day.
This week we're watching:
💰 Companies where valuations may have become stretched.
📉 Businesses that could be overlooked by the market.
⚖️ The difference between price and value.
One of the biggest lessons in investing is that a great business doesn't automatically make a great investment.
Price matters.
What's more important to you—buying quality, or buying value?

What Burrell is watching: Earnings vs Expectations
A company can report record profits... and still see its share price fall.
It sounds counterintuitive, but markets don't simply react to results - they react to expectations.
This week, our investment team is watching:
📈 Earnings quality – Are profits sustainable, or were they boosted by one-off events?
📊 Management guidance – What are company leaders saying about the road ahead?
💭 Market expectations – Were investors expecting even better results?
It's a reminder that investing isn't just about what happened - it's about what the market expected to happen.
Have you ever been surprised by a company's share price reaction after reporting?

The start of a new financial year is a good opportunity to review your financial position.
Questions worth asking:
Is your portfolio still aligned with your goals?
Are you appropriately diversified?
Have your circumstances changed?
Is your investment strategy still appropriate?
Small reviews today can make a meaningful difference over time.
