There's a common belief that clients want an itemised bill because they want transparency.

In reality, most don't care about the line by line detail. What itemised billing often does instead is create a whole set of behaviours inside the business that work against efficiency, productivity, profitability and cash flow.

Worth reconsidering whether the systems built around a perceived client need are actually serving the business, or working against it.

If this sounds familiar in your firm, we're always happy to talk it through.

Only two things move what your firm is worth: average rate, what you bill per hour of paid labour, and revenue lock up, how much revenue is sitting in WIP and debtors instead of the bank. Both are still movable before 30 June 2027.

In this webinar you'll learn exactly what's changed under the new CGT rules, what it means for your firm's number, and what to action before the deadline.

It's rarely one big decision that hurts profit and cash flow. It's hundreds of small ones, made differently by different people, week after week.

That's what discretion looks like inside a law firm's financial systems. And it's exactly why consistency matters more than most firms realise.

If your financial system needs exceptions, they should stay exceptions. The moment they become the majority, profit and cash both start to slip.

Worth asking where discretion might be creeping into your own numbers.

Two firms sell for the same price, to the same kind of buyer, at the same time. One pays around $810,000 in capital gains tax. The other pays around $388,000.

The only difference is what each business was recorded as worth on 1 July 2027.
Do you know what your firm's number would be?

We're running a webinar to explain the changes and what they mean for your firm's goodwill. CGT and tax changes for law firms, Tuesday 1 September, 12pm to 1pm.

Some parents are skipping meals so their kids can eat. Others are pulling their children out of school just to access a free lunch.

This is the reality the Relief Hub sees every week, and it's why we've committed to raising $2,000 a week to support their work alongside Wesley Mission Queensland.

Consistent funding means more hampers, earlier support, and less stress for families doing it tough.

Just 40 people giving $50 a week would get us there. Every contribution helps.

From 1 July 2027, every SME law firm in Australia gets a permanent number attached to it, a legislated valuation figure that sits inside every future capital gains tax calculation on the business, for as long as it's owned.

Most principals have never had their firm formally valued and don't realise that number can still move, significantly, before 30 June 2027.

Join our webinar, CGT and tax changes for law firms: the 1 July 2027 reset, to understand what's changed, what it means for your firm's number, and what you can still do about it before the deadline.

Tuesday 1 September, 12pm to 1pm.

We're looking forward to ALPMA Summit 2026, 9 to 11 September in Geelong, Victoria.

We'll be at our stand for the full event, and we will be launching our Official Research and Education Partnership with ALPMA.

If you haven't registered yet, it's well worth your time. ALPMA Summit brings together law firm leaders from across the country for three days of practical sessions on running a better firm, from people and technology through to finance and growth. It's one of the few events where you can sit down with the people facing the same challenges as you, not just hear from speakers on a stage.

If you're a law firm leader thinking about what your numbers are really telling you, come and say hello. We'd love to chat.

Register for the summit here if you haven't already: https://gems.eventsair.com/2026-alpma-summit/registration/Site/Register

There's a difference between running a business on gut feel and running it on knowing your numbers.

Gulshan Gupta explains what that difference looks like in practice, and why FWO's approach to advisory goes beyond simply reporting the numbers. It's about making sure clients understand what those numbers mean for their firm.

Watch Gulshan explain it here: https://lnkd.in/gCayRyJx

Most law firms have plenty of numbers. What's often missing is insight.

A profit and loss statement will tell you what happened. It won't tell you why, or what to do next.

That's the gap. Reporting looks backward. Insight looks forward and gives you the confidence to make decisions instead of guessing.

Is your firm reporting on the past, or getting insight into what's next?
