📈 Made a capital gain? Here’s what you should know.
Selling an investment property or other asset this year? You may be eligible for the 50% CGT discount, but it’s a common misunderstanding:
✅ 50% CGT discount ≠ 50% less tax
Under current rules, eligible taxpayers who’ve held an investment property for at least 12 months may qualify for the discount. It reduces the capital gain included in your assessable income, not your tax bill by half. Capital losses and other eligibility rules can also affect how the discount applies.
⚠️ With broader CGT reforms set to change the treatment of gains accruing from 1 July 2027, timing and planning matter more than ever.
