16 years ago today, I graduated from university! 🎓

Five years studying for my degree, followed by another three completing my CPA qualification.

And it certainly wasn't the traditional path!

I didn't finish high school, and somewhere amongst those years of studying I was working full time, building a house, planning a wedding and building a life.

There were plenty of times I wanted to give up. But I kept going.

I've been incredibly fortunate to meet some wonderful people and work alongside some inspiring accountants throughout my career.

And 16 years later, I'm pretty proud of where that journey has taken me.

The qualifications are something I'll always be proud of, but it's the years of experience, the people, the challenges and everything I've learnt along the way that have really shaped the accountant I am today.

Now I get to bring all of that into my own business, Accountable. 💚

And there's still so much more I want to do!

Last week I swapped the office for a day of learning at Xero Supercharge in Newcastle and thoroughly enjoyed it.

There’s something incredibly valuable about getting out from behind the screen and having the opportunity to learn face-to-face directly from the people behind the software we work in every day.

It wasn’t only about learning new features or what’s coming next. It was the conversations, asking questions, hearing how others are doing things and having the time to think about how we can continue to do things better.

Working in regional NSW, opportunities like this are particularly valuable to me.

Our regional businesses deserve access to the same knowledge, technology and opportunities as businesses anywhere else. Part of my role is continuing to get out there, learn, stay connected and bring that knowledge home.

Because what I learn doesn’t stay with me.

It comes back into the conversations I have with clients, the systems we put in place, the advice I give and the way I support businesses across our regional communities.

A day very well spent. Thanks Xero for bringing people together and continuing to invest in the advisors who work alongside small businesses every day.

I knew I wanted to help people understand their numbers and feel supported in business.

What I didn’t know was that one day I’d be sitting here looking at a Xero Gold Partner trophy.

The trophy is soooo nice - it arrived today and I’m over the moon!

But what really makes me proud is everything behind it.

The clients who trusted me.
The referrals.
The late nights.
The lessons.
The risks.
The growth.

Accountable Business Services wasn’t bought. It wasn’t inherited. It wasn’t part of some master plan.

It was built one client, one conversation, and one step at a time.

Today I’m feeling incredibly grateful for everyone who has been part of the journey so far.

Hey there, I’m Melinda.

Accountant, business owner, wife, mum of three girls and the woman behind Accountable Business Services.

I realised it’s been a while since I’ve properly introduced myself, so if you’re new here, welcome.

I grew up in the Upper Hunter and built my career in accounting, spending years working with businesses of all shapes and sizes before taking the leap into running my own practice.

Like many of the business owners I work with, I didn’t start with a perfect plan.

What I did have was a passion for helping people and a belief that accounting could be more than tax returns, deadlines and compliance.

Over the years, I’ve learnt that most business owners don’t struggle because they aren’t good at what they do.

They struggle because nobody ever taught them the business side.

The systems.
The numbers.
The tax. The cashflow.
The confidence to make decisions.
That’s the part I love.

I love helping people understand their numbers.

I love seeing someone go from overwhelmed to confident.

I love being the person they call when they have a question, an idea, a challenge or a big dream they want to turn into reality.

Because behind every set of accounts is a person building something important.

A family.
A future.
A business they’re proud of.

I now realise starting this business was never really about accounting.

It’s about helping people feel supported, informed and confident enough to take the next step.

ANZAC Day always carries a quiet weight to it.

It’s not loud or rushed.

It’s the early morning, the stillness, the stories passed down through families which are sometimes spoken, sometimes simply felt.

For many of us, it’s a grandfather who served.
A great uncle whose name is etched somewhere far from home.
Or stories shared over time that remind us what resilience and sacrifice really look like.

In the business arena we often talk about perseverance, hard seasons and pushing through.

Days like today remind me that resilience runs much deeper than deadlines, numbers or decisions.

It’s built on courage.
On showing up when things are uncertain.
On doing what needs to be done, even when it’s hard.

Today is a moment to pause.

To reflect.
To acknowledge.
And to be grateful for the freedoms we have, both in life and in the businesses we’re building.
