Taking steps to stay compliant with ATO rules

“Every year we see small businesses run into avoidable issues because they haven’t kept accurate records, reported all their income or managed their cashflow effectively.”
— Angela Allen, ATO Assistant Commissioner

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is encouraging small businesses to stay compliant to avoid unnecessary penalties, fines, and disruptions. Taking a proactive approach to your tax obligations can make a significant difference to your business’s financial health and peace of mind.

So, what can you do to improve your compliance position?

Stay on top of your ATO debts
Engaging early with the ATO is key. Whether it’s setting up a payment plan or making voluntary payments, managing your debt proactively helps avoid stronger enforcement action.

Separate accounts for key obligations
Consider maintaining dedicated bank accounts for GST and PAYG withholding. This helps protect your cash flow and ensures funds are available when it’s time to meet your BAS and other tax obligations.

Keep accurate, up-to-date records
Good record keeping is a legal requirement and essential for running an efficient business. Moving from manual systems to digital accounting platforms can reduce errors and streamline reporting.

Prepare for Payday Super
From 1 July 2026, employers will be required to pay super at the same time as wages. Now is the time to review your payroll systems and ensure they can handle more frequent reporting and payments.

Plan properly if closing your business
If you’re winding down, it’s important to meet all final obligations, including cancelling your ABN, lodging final returns, and ensuring employee entitlements are paid.

The ATO also recommends working with a registered tax practitioner to ensure you remain compliant with current tax laws and obligations.

If you’d like support reviewing your compliance position, our team is here to help—get in touch to ensure your business stays on track.

FBT Year End is Here – What You Need to Do

While the standard financial year ends in June, the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) year wraps up on 31 March, making now the perfect time to get your records in order.

If your business provides benefits to employees, such as company vehicles, gym memberships, entertainment, or expense reimbursements—it’s important to ensure everything is accurately recorded and ready for review.

To stay on track, make sure you:

Record odometer readings as at 31 March for all company vehicles
Gather receipts and documentation for any employee benefits provided
Review how benefits have been used (e.g. business vs personal use)
Ensure all relevant information is complete and up to date

Getting this right can make a significant difference—not only in meeting your compliance obligations but also in ensuring you’re not paying more FBT than necessary.

FBT can be complex, and small details can have a big impact on the final outcome. Taking the time now to review your position can save you both time and money down the track.

If you’d like assistance reviewing your FBT position or preparing your return, our team is here to help.

Prepare for Payday Super: Key Steps for Employers

From 1 July 2026, the way super is paid will change significantly. Employers will be required to pay super at the same time as salary and wages, rather than quarterly.

Under the new rules, super contributions must reach employees’ funds within 7 business days of payday (with limited exceptions). Contributions will be calculated at 12% of qualifying earnings, and penalties may apply if payments are late, incomplete, or made to the incorrect fund.

To ensure your business is prepared, it’s important to start planning now. This includes reviewing your cash flow to manage more frequent payments, confirming employee super details are up to date, and deciding when you will transition to Payday Super (early adoption is permitted).

You should also ensure your systems and processes are ready, including:
- Payroll software capability for real-time super payments
- Clearing house or super fund payment processes
- Awareness that the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH) will close from 1 July 2026

It’s also recommended to test your processes and identify any potential issues early, so they can be resolved before implementation.

From 1 July 2026, Payday Super will be mandatory. Businesses that continue to pay super quarterly risk ATO compliance action.

If you need assistance preparing for these changes, please reach out to our team—we’re here to help ensure a smooth transition.
