Your family trust, your investment property and your share portfolio all just had their rules rewritten.

Episode 41 of The Ledger covers the seismic tax reset in the 2026-27 Federal Budget: the end of the 50% CGT discount, negative gearing quarantined on established homes, a 30% minimum tax on family trusts, and the market value reset that ends the free ride for pre-CGT assets.

✅ The new $1,000 no-receipts standard deduction
✅ The $250 Working Australians Tax Offset
✅ Loss carry back returns, and startups cashing out losses
✅ The $20,000 instant asset write-off trap

You spent hundreds on your classroom this year. A class set of novels, prizes for the merit box, a farewell gift for your year sixes, lunch for the kid who forgot theirs again. It all feels claimable. Then the return goes in and the ATO draws a line through most of it. Episode 40 covers the trap catching Australia's most generous profession: spending the ATO calls private, no matter who required it. Gifts for students, a struggling kid's lunch, the flu shot the school insists on, the tracksuit and runners you live in teaching PE. Also in this episode: the kids' iPad trap in work-from-home claims, the crested uniform exception, when a first aid course makes the cut, and the $400 camp tent rule. Listen now. Link in bio.

You open the banking app and see $50,000. It feels like $50,000.
A chunk of it isn't yours. It's the GST you collected and the PAYG you withheld from your staff's wages, sitting in the same account as your working capital. So it buys the equipment, funds the campaign, covers a drawing. Then the BAS arrives and the cash is gone.
Episode 39 covers the fix Ben gives every client: the Vault. A separate high-interest account with no card access, fed by a weekly sweep based on real numbers — your net GST from Xero or MYOB, not a guessed percentage of gross sales.
Also in this episode: the second-year PAYG instalment shock, what changes when Payday Super starts on 1 July, and a way to turn the tax bill into frequent flyer points.

She ran her café for 20 years. Then she decided to gift the equipment and lease to her son — no sale, no money changing hands.

One casual mention in a BAS meeting saved her a $60,000 tax bill.

Here's the trap: under the ATO's market value rule, giving an asset to family is taxed as if you sold it at full market price. No cash in your pocket — but a very real tax bill. And in WA, stamp duty can hit the person receiving it too.

Episode 37 of the podcast (plus this week's blog) breaks down the gift trap, and the small business CGT concessions that can bring the tax on a business sale right down — sometimes to zero — if you plan before you sign.

From 1 July 2026, the quarterly super window closes. Super gets paid on payday, every payday, and it needs to reach the fund within seven business days.

For some businesses, that's a straightforward software update. For businesses that have been using the quarterly buffer to manage cashflow, it's a bigger shift. The new penalties for missing the deadline are issued automatically, with no human review.

We're already working through the transition with clients and have written a full rundown of what's changing, what the penalties look like, and the three things to do before June.

To learn more, have a read of our blog post covering this over on the website.

With EOFY just around the corner, this episode is for the paramedics.

We do the tax returns for a significant chunk of WA's paramedic community, and every year the same mistakes come up. Black sneakers that don't qualify as protective footwear. Apple Watches claimed in full without any apportionment diary. Gym memberships that only qualify in very specific specialist roles.

This episode covers what you can and can't claim across clothing, equipment, vehicles, study, phone and internet costs, and a few things that are legitimately on the table and regularly missed.

If you're a paramedic and want to know where you stand before July, it's worth a listen. Head to the podcast hub on the Aevum Accounting website.

The gym membership. The golf day. The school fees. The Christmas party that went over budget. A lot of business owners put things through the company and figure they'll sort it out at tax time.

We've written a plain-English rundown of what actually crosses the line and what doesn't so you no longer need to guess.
