USING A REGISTERED BAS AGENT
There is no protection for you as a taxpayer if you use an unregistered BAS agent. Ensure that you check the credentials of your ‘bookkeeper’ before relying on their GST advice and BAS skills. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) administers ‘safe harbour’ provisions set out in the Taxation Administration Act 1953 (TAA). Under the safe harbour provisions, taxpayers using a registered tax or BAS agent may not be liable to some administrative penalties imposed by the ATO in certain circumstances.
