Nurses and midwives: your AHPRA renewal, scrubs and CPD study can all be claimed at tax time β but your everyday work shoes and the drive to your regular shift usually can't. The ATO's Tax Time Toolkit spells out exactly what counts. Not sure where you stand?
Mark Your Tax Accountant helps healthcare workers get their 2025β26 return right.

π§ This is one of the most common rental property mistakes we see.
β
REPAIR (deductible now) β fixing something that's worn out or damaged, like replacing a broken tap
β IMPROVEMENT (depreciated over time) β replacing something with a better version, like upgrading a bathroom during a reno
Getting this wrong either short-changes your return this year or gets you an ATO please-explain later. Send us your invoices before you claim.

π Continuing education is part of the job β and often a deduction too.
β
Conference and course fees directly related to your current role
β
Travel and accommodation for CPD (business portion only)
β
Journals, subscriptions and professional memberships
β Study that qualifies you for a brand-new profession (that's capital, not deductible)
Keep your receipts and a note of what each course covered β it makes tax time so much smoother.

β° From 1 July 2026, employers must pay super at the same time as wages, not just quarterly. This is one of the biggest payroll changes in years.
β
Super generally needs to reach your employees' funds within 7 business days of each payday
β
The rate itself stays at 12% β it's the timing that's changed
β Don't assume your current payroll software has this sorted automatically β check with your provider
If you're not sure your systems are compliant, get in touch now rather than after a payday is missed.

ποΈ If you own an investment property and don't have a depreciation schedule, you could be leaving thousands of dollars on the table every year.
β
Covers the building's structure plus fixtures like carpets, hot water systems and blinds
β
A one-off cost from a qualified quantity surveyor, valid for the life of the property
β Don't assume an older property has nothing left to claim β it's always worth checking
Ask us for a referral to a quantity surveyor if you don't have one yet.

π©Ί Doing locum shifts through your own ABN? Here's one that catches doctors out every year.
If your annual income from that ABN work goes over $75,000, you MUST register for GST β even if you're 'just' a contractor.
β
Track your ABN income across ALL practices/hospitals combined
β
Register before you hit the threshold, not after
β Don't assume medical services are automatically GST-free (most aren't, once you're the contractor rather than the patient's provider)
Not sure where you stand? Flick us a message and we'll check it for you.

STP finalisation β don't miss this date
π
If you have employees, your Single Touch Payroll finalisation is generally due by 14 July each year.
β
Check all pay runs for the year are correctly reported
β
Fix any errors before you finalise β your employees rely on this for their own tax returns
β Don't leave it to the last day if you've had staff changes or payroll hiccups during the year
