An ABN and monthly invoices don't make someone a contractor.

The ATO looks at how the work actually happens: who controls it, whose tools get used, whether they can send someone else and who carries the risk.

Get it wrong and the assessment is backdated, with super, PAYG withholding, penalties and interest on top.

From 1 July 2027, two things replace the 50% discount. The first is cost base indexation: your purchase price is lifted in line with inflation, so you're only taxed on the growth above it.

Think of a loaf of bread. It didn't get more valuable, money just lost buying power. Part of your gain isn't real profit at all, it's inflation doing its thing to the price tag.
