Sparkes Accounting is closed today due to Staff Training. Bring on Day 1 of 2 days of tax schools. Hopefully plenty of great ideas how to improve the refunds situation. The office will reopen 8.30am tomorrow.

Again this tax season there will be a heavy focus on Rental properties. The ATO has been trialing their data matching program with information obtained from Real Estates with limited success but this will only be strengthened this tax season. So being 100% sure you come with receipts and also knowing what is a capital improvement versus repair even if undertaken by special strata levies.

Here is the first of the end of year tax.
The ATO is now chasing $76 Billion in debts. The ATO charges 11.17% interest, which from 1 July 2025 will no longer be deductible. The ATO is reluctant to approve payment plans and are now demanding more information than ever before.

Due to increases in running costs our fees this year for a basic tax return will start at $220 including GST payable on the day.

Happy New Year.
We were officially back in the office yesterday and have spent the last 2 days catching up on Emails and tiding up pre Christmas work. And doing appointments.
As we are outside peak times for personal tax returns - we are doing before and after hours on Mondays and one Saturday a month. If need Karen will check and maybe an appointment outside of this can be arranged.

With the uncertainty with interest rates and cost of living increases we have seen the largest increase for the need to get tax returns lodged before the Break. I thank you for your patients while booking for appointments.

After 3 days of education and CPD we are back at it. This is a reminder that we are fast approaching tax time for 2023/24 and that means a few things.
1 Book your appointment as times are booking fast and have been since May
2 Start getting all your receipts in order and to help with your meeting time - summaries in like catergries.
3 Get all log books in order this is for car claims
4 Get you calendar/diaries in order for working from home claims - this is one of the ATO audit target areas this year

We are putting together a document with information relating to tax preparation and tax planning to come out in the few days - keep an eye on emails for this.

Client FYI

If you have lodged your 2022 Tax Return using an Accountant, your 2023 Tax Return Is due either 31st March 2024 or 15th May 2024 depending on your earning requirements.

If you have NOT lodged your 2022 Tax Return, you must do this by 31st October 2023.

Please be aware we are still quite busy trying to meet all our client requirements, so please phone our friendly staff and we will be happy to help confirm which due date for lodgement you fall in to.

The ATO and Tax Practitioners Board are advising that due to the elimination of the Low - Middle Income Offset of $1500, that most tax payers will receive lower than normal tax refunds or may even incur a tax debt.

Therefore this year, more than ever, you are encouraged to keep all your receipts to justify your claims.

By having good receipts this protects you from Audit and us from being deregistered as a Tax Agent.

Please contact our office to receive a Check List to help get your receipts in order.
