Blended families raise a tricky estate planning question. Say you own the family home, then get into a second relationship and your new spouse moves in with you.
You want to look after them. But you also want the home to eventually go to your kids from your first marriage. So how do you do both?

Most parents probably don't want their 18 year old getting instant access to a large inheritance the moment they turn legal age. Let's be honest, a lump sum like that tends to disappear fast.

Estate planning isn't just about deciding who gets your assets. It's also about thinking carefully about how, when and under what circumstances they receive them. A testamentary trust can provide additional flexibility around how assets are managed after someone passes away.
In our latest podcast episode, we unpack:
π¨π©π§ Protecting children, particularly when beneficiaries are young and may not be ready to manage a large inheritance.
π° Managing an inheritance, rather than automatically giving a beneficiary access to a large lump sum, a trust can provide greater control over how and when assets are distributed.
π‘οΈ Asset protection, the structure can potentially provide protection in certain circumstances, including situations where a beneficiary may not be in a position to manage a large amount of money themselves.
π¨π©π§π¦ Blended families, estate planning can become more complex when there are children from previous relationships, and a testamentary trust may provide greater flexibility around providing for both a spouse and children.
π Tax considerations, the episode also explores how testamentary trusts can have tax advantages in certain circumstances, particularly where minor beneficiaries are involved.
π§ Listen to the full podcast episode to hear Billy and Andrew unpack how testamentary trusts work, who may benefit from them and the circumstances where they could be unnecessary.
Think about what a lump sum could actually become if you left it invested and untouched for a long time.
Compound interest does the heavy lifting here. As an example, $200,000 invested at 7% for 20 years grows to roughly $774,000. Same starting amount, just time and patience doing the work.
When people receive an unexpected lump sum, the first question they usually ask is "what should I invest in?"
That's actually the wrong question. The right question is "what am I trying to achieve?"

Understanding what expenses you can claim and which ones you can't, could make a significant difference at tax time.
