Many people accidentally make this mistake during tax time.
If your employer reimbursed you for an expense, you generally can’t claim it again as a deduction on your tax return.
Why? Because the ATO only allows deductions for expenses that you personally paid for and were not reimbursed.
Example:
You buy work-related tools for $300.
Your employer reimburses you the full amount.
Since you didn’t end up paying for it yourself, the $300 cannot be claimed as a tax deduction.
However, you may be able to claim an expense if:
✔ You paid for it yourself
✔ It’s directly related to earning your income
✔ You were not reimbursed
✔ You kept receipts or records
Tax rules can be confusing, and claiming the wrong deductions may lead to issues with the ATO.

Many professionals only think about tax when the end of the financial year is approaching.
But waiting until June can leave little time to properly review your income, expenses, and overall tax position.
Reviewing your finances throughout the year can help you stay organised, manage cash flow better, and avoid unexpected tax surprises.
Taking a proactive approach means fewer last-minute decisions and more clarity about your financial position.
If you’re unsure about your current tax position, reviewing it earlier can make a big difference.

Claiming deductions this tax season? Don’t forget your receipts 🧾
The ATO requires proof for most tax claims — and the good news is digital receipts count too. Screenshots, email invoices, and PDFs are all accepted as long as they clearly show the purchase details.
📌 Just remember to keep your records for at least 5 years in case the ATO asks for them.
Staying organised throughout the year makes tax time smoother and helps ensure you can claim the deductions you’re entitled to.

Ever wondered why your tax refund looks different every year? 🤔
It doesn’t always mean something went wrong.
Your refund can change due to income adjustments, deductions, HELP/HECS repayments, or Medicare thresholds — even small changes can make a difference.
💡 The key takeaway: your circumstances change, so your refund does too.

Guessing your deductions might seem harmless, but the ATO takes a strict approach to estimates.
If you can’t show how you calculated a claim, the ATO may reduce it or deny it altogether.
🚩 Rounded numbers
🚩 No receipts
🚩 Copying last year’s figures
These are some of the most common red flags we see in individual tax returns.
✅ Keep receipts (digital is fine)
✅ Track work-related usage
✅ Use tools like apps or spreadsheets
When in doubt, get advice before you lodge.
