Behind on BAS? Fix it in this order, not the order the ATO letters arrive in.

1. Lodge, even if you cannot pay. Lodgement penalties run separately from the debt and they stop the day you lodge.
2. Call the ATO for a payment plan before they call you. A plan you request is approved far more often than one negotiated after a demand.
3. Reconcile the oldest quarter first, then work forward. Late BAS built on unreconciled bank totals gets amended later, which costs twice.

Five signs your books are more than a quarter behind:

1. Your BAS was lodged from bank totals, not reconciled accounts.
2. You do not know today's true cash position without opening the bank app.
3. There is a shoebox, a drawer or an inbox folder called "receipts".
4. Your accountant asked the same question twice at tax time.
5. You have paid a late-lodgement penalty in the last 12 months.

Payday super started on 1 July. Ten weeks in, these are the three mistakes we keep finding in small-business payrolls.

1. Super is still being paid quarterly. It now has to land in the fund within 7 business days of each pay run.
2. Payroll software is set up, but the clearing-house payment step is manual and gets skipped when the owner is on site.
3. Casuals paid off-cycle are missed because the extra pay run never triggers the super payment.
