September marks the start of spring in Australia - and for business owners, it's also a quiet pocket in the compliance calendar. Tax season admin is done, EOFY panic is behind you, and the next real deadline (Q1 BAS, due 28 October) still feels far away.

That gap is exactly when the businesses who get ahead do it:
- Reviewing FY26-27 cash flow forecasts while there's still room to adjust
- Checking Payday Super and payroll have settled into a rhythm, not just survived the first pay cycle
- Booking a mid-year structure review before October's BAS deadline crowds the calendar

Spring cleaning isn't just for the office. Worth doing the same for your numbers.

Bookkeeping isn't data entry. It's the difference between decisions based on reality and decisions based on vibes.

Unreconciled accounts mean unreconciled decisions - you're pricing, hiring, and spending off numbers that might not be true
Monthly reconciliation catches errors, duplicate payments, and missed invoices while they're still small
"I'll catch it up at EOFY" is how a $200 error becomes a $4,000 mystery

A clean set of books isn't paperwork. It's the dashboard you're supposed to be driving from.

Finance - the founder who doesn't check their BAS
"You'll obsess over a $50 subscription and never look at what you owe the ATO next quarter."
There's a specific kind of founder who's excellent at the product and allergic to the numbers.

Not knowing your BAS liability until it's due is how businesses get blindsided by their own tax
GST you've collected isn't your money - it's the ATO's, held in trust, whether you've mentally accounted for it or not
A rough idea of your quarterly liability, updated monthly, removes 90% of EOFY panic

You don't need to love the numbers. You just need to not be surprised by them.

"The ATO used to soften the blow of being late. It doesn't anymore."
If you incur General Interest Charge or Shortfall Interest Charge on or after 1 July 2025, you can no longer claim it as a tax deduction.

Late lodgement and late payment now cost more, full stop - no deduction to take the edge off
Businesses that have treated GIC as "an acceptable cost of running behind" need to rethink that math
This is the ATO's quiet way of saying: cash flow discipline just got more expensive to skip

Being on time isn't just about avoiding a fine anymore - it's about not losing a deduction you used to be able to count on.

Tax - director obligations most people miss
Being a company director comes with personal obligations most first-time directors don't know about until it matters.

Directors can be held personally liable for unpaid PAYG withholding and superannuation guarantee amounts - the "corporate veil" doesn't protect you here.
Director ID requirements are now a legal obligation, not an optional admin task.
Lodging BAS and tax returns late doesn't just cost the business - in some circumstances, it becomes a personal liability issue for the director.

None of this is designed to scare you. It's designed to make sure the structure you think is protecting you actually is.

Payroll - the super guarantee trap
The payroll mistake that's quietly getting more expensive.
Superannuation guarantee non-compliance used to be a slow-moving problem. It isn't anymore.

Payday super is changing how and when SG needs to be paid - the margin for "I'll catch it up next quarter" is shrinking.
Underpaying super, even accidentally, now comes with penalties that are harder to negotiate down.
Many small businesses find out they've had a systemic payroll error only when it's been running for two years, not two months.

If you haven't had your payroll setup checked against current rules in the last twelve months, it's worth doing before it's found for you.

"The best financial advice I ever received had nothing to do with tax."
It was this: Know your numbers like you know your product.
Most founders can tell you their product's features, their customers' problems, their competitive advantage, in detail, without notes.
Ask them their gross margin. Their cash conversion cycle. The three biggest drivers of their cost base. Often, the answer is less certain.
Financial literacy is not about becoming an accountant. It is about understanding the story your business is telling, so you can write the next chapter intentionally.
Lynden Group. We help you know your numbers.

Your accountant should be doing more than your tax return.
This sounds obvious. But for many Australian small businesses, the relationship with their accountant begins in June and ends when the return is lodged.
A good accounting relationship looks more like this:
- You call in February with a strategic question and get a real answer
- When you are considering a major purchase, someone looks at the tax and cash flow implications before you sign
- When the ATO releases new compliance priorities, your advisor tells you what it means for your business specifically, not just in a generic newsletter
- When you are thinking about hiring your first employee, there is a conversation about the payroll obligations before the offer letter goes out
This is not a premium service. This is what good advisory looks like.
At Lynden Group, it is how we work with every client,, not just the large ones.
