When you say youâve kept all your receipts vs when you say âI think theyâre in the car somewhere.â đ§ž
Tax time brings out the full range of facial expressions. We can work with a lot, but good records make your tax return much easier to prepare.
Receipts, work-related expenses, private health details, rental property records, investment income and anything unusual from the year are all worth getting together before you send your information through.

Eat dinner at home, then go out for dessert đ° Itâs one of my favourite little money tips because you still get the fun part of going out without the full restaurant bill.
You get dressed, leave the house, sit somewhere nice, order something you actually want, and enjoy the experience. Youâve just made one decision beforehand that keeps the cost in a better place.
Thatâs very Profit First. You decide where the money is going before the spending starts.
In business, that might look like putting money aside for tax, profit, ownerâs pay and operating expenses before the main account gets treated like âavailable moneyâ.
At home, it can be as simple as making dinner first and still getting the tiramisu. Whatâs your favourite low-cost way to still feel like youâve gone out?

Watch this space đWeâve been behind the scenes working on something weâre very excited to share soon.
Thereâs a lot that happens before something new reaches clients. Ideas get pulled apart, rebuilt, tested against real business problems, and shaped into something useful.
How good is having a shared vision!
Northwest Accountancy is now part of Profit First Accounting , and this next chapter is giving us more room to bring together tax, bookkeeping, cashflow, Profit First and practical business education in a way that serves clients better throughout the year.
More details coming soon.

đđ° One of my favourite personal investments this year has been a zoo membership
One membership fee = a whole year of afternoons wandering around, getting outside, seeing cute animals and giving my brain a break from work mode.
I love spending money on things Iâll use again and again. The zoo membership has been that for me. I do the same with my yoga membership too. Itâs already paid for, itâs easy to use, and it gives me a reason to make time for something that helps me feel better.
This is how I like to think about personal spending. Not âcan I afford it today?â but âwill I keep using this, and will I be glad I spent the money?â
A membership isnât the right choice for everything, but when it fits your life, it can turn into a lot of value across the year. Whatâs a membership, pass or annual fee youâve bought that has been completely worth it?

𧞠Tax time is not a race, especially if getting it done quickly includes lodging with missing income and weak records.
A recent Yahoo Finance article, âATO warning over biggest mistake Aussies make at tax time: 'Entirely avoidable'â reminds us of a mistake many Australians make around tax time: moving too fast before all the information is ready.
Read the article here: https://au.finance.yahoo.com/.../ato-warning-over-biggest...
A better approach is to use tax time as a review point:
⢠Are all income sources included?
⢠Are deductions backed by receipts or records?
⢠Are GST and BAS reconciled properly?
⢠Has business and personal spending been separated?
⢠Are work-related claims still relevant to how you earned income this year?
⢠Are rental property, investment or side-hustle records complete?
đ° At Profit First Accounting & Coaching, we help individuals and business owners handle tax with the right information in place. We also help business owners improve the systems behind tax time, including bookkeeping, Xero, BAS, cashflow, Profit First and setting money aside before the ATO becomes stressful.
If your tax return has more going on than wages and a few basic deductions, send us a message or book a call through our website.

đ§şđ¸ Behind on more than one tax return? This is your sign to stop leaving it in the too-hard basket.
If you had one or more prior-year tax returns outstanding at 30 June 2026, your 2026 tax return is due by 31 October 2026.
Start by checking your ATO account through myGov or the ATO app.
If you were not required to lodge for a particular year, you may need to submit a non-lodgment advice instead of leaving that year sitting as overdue.
Behind on tax returns or not sure which years are outstanding? Get in touch with us and we can help you work out what needs to happen next. đ˛

Client reminder: we are no longer downloading and forwarding ATO correspondence. After your tax return is lodged, please check your ATO account for your Notice of Assessment, refund amount, amount owing, payment due dates and any ATO messages.

⨠Northwest Accountancy is part of Profit First Accounting and we want to show you what that means beyond the name change.
Profit First Accounting & Coaching started in 2018 when Vanessa began working from her home office. Since then, it has grown into a national team helping Australian business owners understand their numbers, improve cashflow, reduce debt and build businesses that pay them properly.
Profit First Accounting & Coaching was built to help business owners change that pattern with practical cashflow support, Profit First implementation, bookkeeping, tax, BAS, compliance and business money education.
The merger brings Northwest Accountancyâs tax, accounting and Karratha client base together with Profit First Accounting & Coachingâs cashflow-focused systems, education programs and Profit First experience.
For NWA clients, this means youâre being introduced to a team with the same focus on practical advice and making money less confusing.
You will still see some content here while we transition, but by October, will be the main place to find us on Instagram.
Follow us over there for future updates, resources and education.
What would you like to learn more about from the merged team: tax, BAS, bookkeeping, cashflow, Profit First, or personal money?
