Bookkeeping categories matter.

Where an expense is recorded can make a difference to the information you get back from your accounts.

If costs are regularly put into broad categories such as “miscellaneous” or recorded inconsistently from one month to the next, it becomes harder to see what different parts of the business are actually costing you.

Good bookkeeping creates consistent records that make your reports more useful and make it easier to compare expenses over time.

If you would like more regular support with your bookkeeping, get in touch. We can help keep your transactions recorded correctly and your financial information up to date throughout the year.

That receipt sitting in your inbox, glovebox or camera roll still matters.

Your bookkeeper needs the information behind your transactions to keep your records accurate. That can include receipts and tax invoices, business expenses you paid personally, details of asset purchases and an explanation when a transaction is not obvious.

Sending these through as you go means less chasing later and more accurate financial information when you need it.
If you are unsure what your bookkeeper needs or the easiest way to send it through, ask us.

Q1 has wrapped up, which makes now a good time to check what your numbers are actually showing.

Are sales where you expected them to be? Have expenses crept up?

Is cash in the bank matching what the business is earning?

Keeping your bookkeeping up to date means you can answer those questions while there is still plenty of time to do something with the information.

If you would like help keeping your books organised and your numbers useful, get in touch.

Six things worth checking before your BAS goes in:

1️⃣ Every bank account matched off against the statement, not just the main one
2️⃣ Your software is adding GST to the right things
3️⃣ You’re not claiming GST back on things that never had it
4️⃣ The weekly shop and the kids’ footy fees are out of the business account
5️⃣ ABNs on file for everyone you’ve paid
6️⃣ Every number comes off a receipt or a statement, not out of your head

Skip one and you usually won’t hear about it until the ATO does.

Rather someone else ran that check? Get in touch.

Your July to September BAS is due on one of three dates. Which one depends on how you lodge it.

1️⃣ 28 October, if you post it in

2️⃣ 11 November, if you do it yourself online

3️⃣ 25 November, if a registered BAS or tax agent does it for you

Not sure which is yours? Work to 28 October. You can’t claim the later dates after the fact.

Lodge monthly instead? Your September one is due 21 October.

Want a registered agent lodging yours next quarter? Get in touch

It is easy for recurring expenses to keep rolling along without much attention.

Software subscriptions, memberships, insurance payments, equipment costs and other automatic payments can gradually add up, especially when services have changed or are no longer being used.

A regular review of what is leaving your business bank account can help you spot duplicated services, unexpected increases and expenses that no longer make sense for the business.

Your bookkeeping records can make that review much easier because they show exactly where the money is going over time.

If you would like help understanding your regular business expenses and what your numbers are showing, get in touch.

October starts today, and your Q1 BAS is due on one of three dates: 28 October, 11 November or 25 November.

Which one depends on how you lodge. Through a registered BAS agent it is the latest of the three, but the agent has to be engaged before they can lodge for you.

If you would rather have 25 November than a scramble in October, now is when that gets decided.

Contact us so we can sort it before the quarter closes.

Paying a spouse, a child or another family member through payroll?

They are a closely held payee, and they have their own reporting deadline. If you have both closely held payees and regular employees, the STP end of year finalisation for those payees is due 30 September.

It is one of the least known obligations in the calendar, and it applies to a lot of family run businesses without them realising. Not sure whether it applies to you?

Contact us and we will tell you.

The July to September quarter closes on Wednesday.

Two things land on 30 September:

🔹The quarter your next BAS covers ends
🔹STP end of year finalisation is due for closely held payees, which means anyone paying family members through payroll

After Wednesday, the figures are what they are. Anything not recorded by then gets fixed the hard way.

Message us if you want it clean before it closes.
