When your parents start needing you financially, emotionally or both.

Sometimes it happens slowly. A few extra appointments. Help with paperwork. A conversation about driving, care or whether the house is still right.

Sometimes it happens all at once.

And for many people in their 40s and 50s, it lands right alongside work, kids, mortgages and their own plans for the future.

This is often referred to as 'The Sandwich Generation'.

Supporting ageing parents can become an emotional responsibility and a financial one.

The challenge is making sure you can be there for them without quietly losing sight of your own position in the process.

How much super is enough?

The better question is: enough for what?

Retirement can look very different from one person to the next.

For some, it means travel and helping the kids. For others, it’s staying close to home, cutting back work gradually or simply knowing the bills are covered without stress.

That’s why there isn’t one magic number.

The right amount depends on the life you want, when you want to stop working, what you own, what you owe and how much flexibility you’d like later.

Start with the life. Then work backwards to the number.

“Have we left it too late?”

That question can carry a lot of weight.

Sometimes it comes from someone in their 50s who hasn’t paid enough attention to super. Sometimes it’s a couple approaching retirement who suddenly realise the finish line feels much closer than it used to.

The answer isn’t always simple. But “later than ideal” is very different from “too late”.

There may still be meaningful decisions to make around super, debt, investments, retirement timing and how much flexibility you want in the years ahead.

The important part is replacing the worry with a clear picture of where you stand now, and what’s still possible from here.

Aged care changed today. Here’s the part families should know.

From 1 October, people receiving Support at Home will no longer pay a contribution for approved personal care services such as showering, dressing and personal hygiene, provided those services are included in their support plan and there are sufficient funds in their budget.

That doesn’t mean all home-care costs disappear. Contributions can still apply to services such as cleaning, gardening and other everyday living support.

For families helping ageing parents, changes like these are another reason to understand what care is funded, what isn’t, and how those costs fit into the bigger financial picture.

Because aged care decisions can become financial decisions very quickly.

“I wish I’d thought about this 10 years earlier.”

Retirement planning often starts well before retirement.

Your 40s and 50s can be some of the most valuable years to make decisions that give you more choice later, around work, travel, family, where you live and how you spend your time.

One of our recent articles looks at '7 Things Retirees Often Wish They’d Considered in Their 40s & 50s'.

“We earn good money. So where does it all go?”

We hear this from families all the time.

And school holidays can make it even louder!

A few extra lunches out. Activities. Parents juggling work. Sport. Groceries. Maybe a weekend away. Then layer that over the mortgage, school costs and everything else already coming out of the account.

The interesting part is that this often isn’t a spending problem.

It’s a visibility problem.

When money is moving in ten different directions, even families earning well can feel like they’re standing still.

A lot of the Story Wealth team are in this stage of life too. We understand the juggle.

And sometimes the first useful step isn’t cutting back.

It’s simply getting clear on where the money is actually going, and deciding what you want it to do next.

In the meantime... Happy School Holidays! 🩷

Interest rate rises are back in the headlines. But the bigger story isn’t one decision in the US.

Last week, the US Federal Reserve raised rates by 0.25%, its first increase since 2023, as inflation remains elevated.

Closer to home, Australia has already had three rate rises this year, with the cash rate now sitting at 4.35%. The RBA meets again next week.

For investors, that creates an interesting tension.

Higher rates can put pressure on share valuations and economic growth, while also changing the outlook for cash, fixed interest, currencies and different parts of the share market.

And markets don’t wait for central banks to make their next move. They continually adjust based on what they expect will happen next.

That’s why good investment decisions aren’t about reacting to one announcement. They’re about keeping perspective on where an investment sits within your broader strategy, timeframe and goals.

A dementia diagnosis can change far more than one person’s life.

It can change family roles, plans, finances and the way everyone moves through everyday life.

This October, Story Wealth is joining our sister business, Ageing With Grace Advisory, for Cuppa Time for Dementia, raising funds for Dementia Australia and the families living with dementia every day.

Sometimes the hardest part of caring for an ageing parent isn’t the appointments, the paperwork or the decisions.

It’s the moment afterwards.

You get back in the car.
Close the door.

And for the first time all day, nobody needs anything from you.

That’s often when it hits.

How much has changed.
How tired you are.
How scared you are.
How much you miss the way things were.

Know that what you are doing... is really difficult.

And you are amazing. 🤎

Today, on RUOK? Day, check in on the person who is always doing the checking in.

They may need someone to ask too.

“We want to help the kids.”

It’s a conversation we hear often.

A house deposit. Help with the grandkids. A financial leg-up now rather than an inheritance later.

Then comes the important question:

➡️ How much can we comfortably give without changing our own future?

Generosity and good planning can absolutely sit alongside each other.

The key is understanding what saying yes today means for all the years still ahead.
