There are many scams around these days, some of them are sophisticated and look legitimate.

If you receive an email and it doesn't look right, check the email address, do not click on the link and log into your account via a trusted browser to ensure you stay safe.

My Gov scams are everywhere and by falling victim to one of these scams means scammers can access your My Gov account, log into your ATO account and commit tax fraud, and you are left a victim of this.

Be aware of how to protect yourself, by reading further details here:

How to spot myGov scams and what to do if one affects you.

Do you have a Director ID yet?

We have received correspondence from ASIC regarding director ID’s advising that action may be taken if director’s have not yet met their obligations and obtained a Director ID.

Actions that may be taken if a director fails to apply include:

• being asked to attend an interview with a delegate of the Registrar to explain why they haven’t obtained one, and / or
• referral to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) to consider investigation and prosecution.

Director ID offences
It’s a criminal offence for a director to not apply on time and information about the penalties will be included in the correspondence being issued. You can learn more about director ID penalties and offences from the ASIC website https://asic.gov.au/for-business/running-a-company/company-officeholder-duties/director-identification-number/

The fastest way is to apply online at ABRS
https://www.abrs.gov.au/director-identification-number

If you are unable to apply online, you can phone the ABRS on 13 62 50.

If you still need to get your Director ID and need assistance,
please contact our office on 07 3847 4111 or email us [email protected]

You need a director identification number (director ID) if you're a director of a company, registered Australian body, registered foreign company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation.

The ATO has now changed the way you can claim working from home deductions!

The ATO has changed how working from home deductions can be claimed by eligible taxpayers for the 2023 income year.

If you have genuinely worked from home at any time from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023, you may be eligible to use the ATO’s revised fixed-rate (67 cents per hour) method to claim for:

• energy expenses (i.e., electricity and gas) for lighting, heating/cooling, and to run electronic items used for work or business;
• internet expenses;
• mobile and home telephone expenses; and
• stationery and computer consumables (e.g., printing paper and printer cartridges).

Under the revised fixed-rate method, a claim for the above running expenses is calculated at a fixed rate of 67 cents for each hour that you worked from home during the 2023 income year.

This is an alternative method to claiming for the above running expenses using the actual expenses method, which would require a separate claim for the work/business portion of each expense.

Claims for deductible running expenses not covered by the revised fixed-rate method (e.g., depreciation of a computer used for work or business) can be claimed under the actual method.

What records do you need to keep when using the ATO’s revised fixed-rate method?

You will need to keep some receipts, bills or invoices of the running expenses you have incurred in order to verify your claim.
You will also need to keep a record (e.g., a timesheet, diary or similar record) of the number of hours you worked from home during the year, basically as follows:

• From 1 July 2022 to 28 February 2023 – The ATO will generally accept a record of the number of hours worked from home over a representative period (e.g., a four-week period). This can then be used to estimate the total number of hours worked for this entire period.
• From 1 March 2023 to 30 June 2023 – You need to keep a record of the total number of actual hours worked from home. This effectively means that you will need to make a record (e.g., a diary entry) of the number of hours worked from home on each occasion that you worked from home.

If you have worked from home during the 2023 income year, please contact our office to discuss your situation further as you are likely to be affected by the above changes.

Did you know paying your tax to the ATO early could mean you earn some extra interest?

The ATO have recently started paying interest on amounts that are paid at least 14 days prior to the due date. If you have to pay tax to the ATO at the end of the year and you pay it early, the ATO will pay you interest for paying it early!
(please note, this interest amount does go towards your assessable income in the following year)

Click the link below to find out what payments are eligible to receive interest on and to find out more information.

You may receive interest when you pay certain tax liabilities more than 14 days before the due date.

Did you know if you are a Director of a registered company you must apply to have a Director ID?

Part of the Modernising Business Registers program implemented by the Government, ALL directors will now be required to have a Director ID.

A director ID is a personal unique identifier a director applies for once and keeps forever. It is to help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

Everyone will keep their director ID even if you stop being a company director, change your name or move interstate or overseas. It confirms the director’s identity and will in the future show which company/companies you are linked to.

** Every director will need their Directors ID before the 30th November 2022 **

Failure to obtain a Director ID before November 30 may result in a penalty from ASIC.

It’s free to apply and the fastest way to apply is online https://www.abrs.gov.au/director-identification-number/apply-director-identification-number.

If you cannot download the app/apply online, you can call 13 62 50 to obtain your ID number.

You will first need to have a MYGOVID with a Standard or Strong identity strength to apply for a director ID online. You can set it up at https://www.mygovid.gov.au/set-up

You will also need to verify information held on your ATO records, (such as a Notice of assessment, bank account details, super account details, etc).
https://www.abrs.gov.au/director-identification-number/apply-director-identification-number/verify-your-identity

Once you have this information ready and handy, the online application is intuitive and takes less than 5 minutes. You will get your director ID instantly.

If you need further information, the ATO have supplied the following video:
https://tv.ato.gov.au/ato-tv/media?v=bi9or7odjorhp6

You must apply for your own director ID so you can verify your identity. No one can apply on your behalf.
