Tomorrow, First Class Accounts bookkeepers from across the country land in Cairns for our national conference.
Nobody starts their own practice picturing a conference room. But ask franchisees what these weeks are worth, and the answer is rarely the agenda.
Nikki has run her Fraser Coast practice since 2009. She calls the network a great big family, and she is specific about why that matters.
People share what has worked, and they are just as open about what has not.
You would still own the business. You would just have around 160 people to ask.

Your July to September BAS has three possible due dates. Only one of them is yours.
ποΈ 28 October if you lodge on paper.
ποΈ 11 November if you lodge it yourself online. The two-week concession is automatic, you do not apply for it.
ποΈ 25 November if you lodge through a registered BAS or tax agent.

We prepare and lodge BAS for clients. Message us.
A question worth sitting with if you have been thinking about running your own practice.
What would you actually be building?
Not the first client. Not the first year. The thing that exists in five years, when the systems are settled and the client base is yours. π
First Class Accounts franchisees are building on a model that has been refined over more than two decades, with around 160 people across Australia who have built the same thing before them.

Ask anyone running their own bookkeeping practice what they like least about the job. It is rarely the bookkeeping. π¬
It is the chasing. The second reminder. The awkward mention at the next catch-up.
The invoice that has been sitting there for six weeks with someone you actually like working with.
Our partners at Pinch take that off the desk entirely. Client payment details are saved once, invoices are paid without anyone chasing, and it reconciles automatically.

A financial management system is more than the software you use. It is how information moves from a transaction to a decision.
This article covers what one includes and how to tell whether yours is doing its job:

If you have spent years in bookkeeping, accounting or corporate finance, you already have the harder half of what running your own practice takes.
The technical knowledge transfers directly. So does knowing how a business actually works financially.
What most people find they need is not more expertise. It is a structure to operate inside, a way to build a client base, and someone to call when a client situation gets complicated. π€
That is the part First Class Accounts provides.

The July to September quarter closes on 30 September.
Your BAS, your super and your tax position all come off whatever the records say on that date.
Four things worth doing before month-end:
π Reconcile everything up to 31 August
π Follow up on the invoices that have gone quiet
π Check payroll matches what was actually paid
π Confirm which BAS due date applies to you
Message us if you would rather hand it over.
Most people think flexibility is something a business gives you later, once it is established.
Maria, a First Class Accounts franchisee, did it the other way around.
She built her own IT infrastructure early on so she could work from anywhere, long before remote work was the norm.
"I started that early on, which gave lots of flexibility to be able to move around. Was way before COVID and any of those things."
The point is not the technology. It is that when you own the business, you get to decide how it runs and when. That decision compounds over time.

Today is the last day of August, which leaves one month in the July to September quarter.
Whatever the records say on 30 September is what your BAS is built from, and what your accountant works from after that.
One month is enough time to fix a quarter. One week is not.
