The Age Pension is administered by Services Australia โ Centrelink, on behalf of the Australian Government. It is assessed that same Australia wide, the only thing that can differ from state to state is the benefits that the Pension Concession Card gives each of its holders.
The Australian Age Pension is means tested and you either fall under the income or the assets test โ these tests are applied to what you have, and you are paid under the test that gives you the lesser amount of payment.
What are assets โ
โข Financial investments
โข Home contents, personal effects, vehicles and other personal assets โ these assets are what you could get if you sold them, not insurance value.
โข Managed investments and superannuation
โข Real estate (not your own home โ unless it is on more than 5 acres)
โข Annuities, income streams and superannuation pensions
โข Shares
โข Gifting
โข Sole trader, partnerships, private trusts, and private companies
โข Deceased estate โ that you are a beneficiary of, which has been finalised.
What is income โ
Income is assessable in several forms; it can be wages (Centrelink use the gross amount in the income test. This is the amount before tax or any other deductions). The income test includes income from anywhere in the world, not just Australia. This includes pensions from other countries, or it could be income being received from a business or company that you own, or it could be deemed income from financial assets as follows -
Financial assets could be as follows and fall under the deeming rules.
โข Savings accounts and term deposits
โข Managed investments, loans (money you have loaded to other people)
โข Debentures
โข Listed shares and securities
โข Some income streams
If youโre a member of a couple and at least one of you gets a pension -
Deeming โ
Deeming is a set of rules used to work out the income created from your financial assets. It assumes these assets earn a set rate of income, no matter what they really earn and the rates currently are as follows โ
If youโre single -
The first $56,400 of your financial assets has the deemed rate of 0.25% applied. Anything over $56,400 is deemed to earn 2.25%.
If youโre a member of a couple and at least one of you get a pension -
The first $93,600 of your combined financial assets has the deemed rate of 0.25% applied. Anything over $93,600 is deemed to earn 2.25%.
As you can see the assessment for Age Pension can be very complicated, if you would like some assistance in finding out if you are entitled or what you might be entitled to, please give us a call and book an appointment today - 02 4934 5916.

MyGov Scam Alert!
Scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details, Stay Smart Online says. The scam starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare benefits and claims.
If you click on the link in the email you are taken to a replica of the real myGov website. Youโll note the URL includes โ.netโ instead of โ.gov.auโ, which is an indication the website is not a legitimate Australian Government domain. If you input your login details you are directed to also enter your secret security question and answer, before youโre taken to the fake Medicare website to input your bank account details. These emails and web pages feature myGov and Medicare design and branding, making them appear legitimate.
Remember, clicking on the link and sharing your details gives these scammers access to your personal information, which they then use to steal your money and identity.
Please be careful and always check the website address!
