If your prices havenโ€™t changed in 2+ yearsโ€ฆ your profit has.

Costs have gone up. Wages, materials, fuel, softwareโ€ฆ everything.

But many businesses havenโ€™t adjusted their pricing.

That usually means:
โ€ข Same workload
โ€ข More stress
โ€ข Less profit

Reviewing your pricing isnโ€™t greedy โ€” itโ€™s necessary.
Strong businesses protect their margins.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Tax vs GST: What's the Difference?
They're both paid to the ATO, but they're not the same thing.
Here's a simple way to understand it.
๐Ÿ’ต Income Tax
Income tax is paid on the profit your business makes.
Think of it like this:
Income โˆ’ Business Expenses = Profit
It's your profit that is taxed, not the total amount of money coming into your business.
________________________________________
๐Ÿงพ GST (Goods and Services Tax)
GST is a 10% tax added to most goods and services sold in Australia.
If your business is registered for GST:
โœ” You collect GST from your customers.
โœ” You claim GST credits on eligible business purchases.
โœ” You report the difference to the ATO through your BAS.
The GST you collect isn't your moneyโ€”you're simply collecting it on behalf of the government.
________________________________________
Here's a Quick Example
You invoice a customer $1,100 (including GST).
โ€ข $100 is GST that you'll report through your BAS.
โ€ข $1,000 is your business income before expenses.
At the end of the financial year, you'll pay income tax on your profit, not on the GST you've collected.
________________________________________
Understanding the difference between tax and GST can help you manage your cash flow and avoid unexpected surprises.
If you're unsure about your tax or GST obligations, our team is always happy to help.

๐Ÿšจ When Do I Need to Register for GST?

If your business has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more (or you expect it to reach $75,000 within the next 12 months), you must register for GST. Once you know you'll exceed the threshold, you generally need to register within 21 days.

๐Ÿ’ก Can I Register Earlier?
Yes! If your turnover is below $75,000, registering for GST is optional. Some businesses choose to register voluntarily so they can claim GST credits on eligible business purchases, while others wait until registration becomes compulsory.

๐Ÿ“ž Not Sure If It's Time?
Every business is different. If your turnover is growing or you're unsure whether you need to register, chat with the team at PLH Accountants. We'll help you understand your obligations and make sure you register at the right time.

๐Ÿค” What Does "Balancing Account" Mean on My Tax Return?

If you've lodged your tax return and the status has changed to "Balancing Account", don't panic!
This simply means the ATO is working out your final tax position. They're checking the information they've received, matching it with your tax return and calculating whether you're due a refund or have tax to pay.

For most people, it's a normal part of the process and doesn't mean there's a problem with their tax return.

If your tax return stays in the same status for an extended period or you've received a message from the ATO requesting more information, our team is happy to help explain what it means.

๐Ÿ“ž Contact PLH Accountants if you have questions about your tax return.

Please note: Assistance with reviewing a tax return or providing tax advice is a professional service and fees may apply.

๐Ÿ”’ Is Your ATO Account Locked Due to Suspicious Activity? Here's What to Do.

If you can't access your ATO online services because your account has been locked for security reasons, don't panic. This usually means the ATO has detected unusual activity and placed a temporary security measure on your account.

Here's what you should do:
โœ… Call the ATO to report the issue and confirm your identity.
โœ… Sign in using myID (Digital ID) if you've previously set it up, as this is the most secure way to access your ATO online services.
โœ… Check your myGov account for any unexpected changes, such as your bank account details, email address or linked services.

โš ๏ธ Don't ignore it. The sooner you contact the ATO, the sooner they can help secure your account and restore access.

Don't feel like spending hours on hold?

๐Ÿ“ž The team at PLH Accountants can contact the ATO on your behalf, help resolve the issue and guide you through the next steps, so you don't have to deal with the stress yourself.

Please note: Assistance with contacting the ATO or resolving account access issues is a professional service and fees apply. We'll always discuss the cost with you before we commence any work.

๐Ÿšจ Received an ATO Message About Your Tax Return? Don't Ignore It.

We're seeing more people receive ATO messages asking them to review deductions they've claimed before their tax return is finalised.

The message may say something like:
"We've noticed some of your deductions may need reviewing. You don't need to do anything at this stageโ€”we'll adjust your return if required and continue processing it."
While that might sound simple, many taxpayers are left wondering:

โ“ Did I claim something incorrectly?
โ“ Will my refund change?
โ“ Should I contact the ATO?

The result? Long wait times on the phone and a lot of unnecessary stress.

Before you spend hours trying to work it out yourself, give us a call.

At PLH Accountants, we can review your tax return, explain what the ATO is querying and help you understand your options. If an amendment is needed, we'll guide you through the process.

Sometimes a quick conversation with your accountant can save you a lot of time, confusion and frustration.

๐Ÿ“ž Need help? Contact the friendly team at PLH Accountants today.

Please note: Assistance with reviewing or amending a tax return is a professional service and fees may apply. We'll let you know any costs before we commence any work.
