Not all revenue deserves to be celebrated equally.

Two businesses can generate the same revenue yet have completely different experiences behind the scenes.

One might earn it from reliable, well-scoped work.

The other might rely on discounts, constant revisions, difficult payment terms, or clients who demand disproportionate amounts of time.

So, when reviewing revenue, look beyond the headline number:

• How much effort did it take to earn?
• How predictable is it?
• How reliably does it turn into cash?
• Would you happily win more of the same work?

The quality of revenue matters just as much as the quantity.

Sometimes, a smaller number can represent a healthier, more sustainable business.

Building wealth is one thing. Making sure it reaches the right people is another.

Estate planning can be easy to put off, especially when you’re focused on growing a business and supporting your family.

But as your financial position changes, your existing arrangements may no longer reflect what you actually want.

It may be worth reviewing:

• Your will and estate arrangements
• Who can make decisions if you’re unable to
• How your business interests may be dealt with
• Whether relevant nominations and documents are still up to date

Wealth planning isn’t only about what you accumulate.

It’s also about what happens to what you’ve built.

If your circumstances have changed, it may be worth reviewing whether your current arrangements still align with your intentions.

Legal and financial advice should be tailored to your individual circumstances.

Starting a new business activity?

Check the tax registrations before the invoices start.

A new service, entity or business venture can bring tax and reporting considerations that are easy to overlook in the excitement of getting started.

Before things get moving, it may be worth checking:

• Whether your existing registrations are still appropriate
• Whether GST or other tax obligations may apply
• Which entity should be entering into contracts and issuing invoices
• Whether any new reporting or compliance requirements apply
• Whether your accounting systems are set up correctly from the start

Getting the structure right early can help avoid unnecessary corrections, compliance issues and surprises later.

A new business activity is exciting. Just make sure the tax side is ready for it too.

Changing your mind can be a sign of good leadership.

Business owners make decisions based on the information available at the time.

Sometimes, new information changes the picture.

Sticking with an old decision simply because you made it isn’t always the best approach.

A few questions worth asking:

• What has changed since we made this decision?
• Are the original assumptions still true?
• What are we learning from the results?
• Would we make the same choice today?

Changing direction thoughtfully isn’t the same as being inconsistent.

Sometimes, it shows you’re paying attention.

Good leadership means knowing when to stay the course, and when the evidence says otherwise.

Fun fact: One supplier can quietly become a single point of failure.

A reliable supplier can make running a business much easier.

But relying heavily on one supplier can also create risk if something suddenly changes.

It may be worth knowing:

• Which supplies are genuinely critical to operations
• Whether alternatives are available
• How quickly you could switch if needed
• Which commitments or lead times could affect you

This doesn’t mean replacing good supplier relationships. Strong relationships are valuable.

It’s simply about knowing where the business may be vulnerable before a disruption happens.

Do you know which supplier your business would struggle most without?

Complexity has a cost, even when it doesn’t appear on the profit and loss.

Every extra product, entity, system or process can add another layer to manage.

Sometimes that complexity is necessary.

Sometimes it has simply accumulated over the years.

It’s worth asking:

• Does each part of the business still have a clear purpose?
• What requires disproportionate management attention?
• Are customers or staff confused by unnecessary complexity?
• What would become easier if one layer disappeared?

Not everything should be simplified.

But complexity should ideally earn its place.

If something creates more work than value, it may deserve another look.

If your business is your biggest asset, what happens when you want to leave it?

Business owners often spend years building value, but much less time thinking about how that value might eventually be realised.

Even if retirement or a sale is years away, some questions are worth considering early:

• Could the business operate without you?
• Is important knowledge documented?
• Are client relationships tied mainly to the owner?
• What would make the business attractive to a future buyer or successor?

Exit planning doesn’t mean you’re ready to leave.

It means building a business that gives you choices when the time eventually comes.

Calling someone a contractor doesn’t necessarily make them one.

Whether a worker is an employee or contractor generally depends on the substance of the working arrangement, not simply the label in an agreement or whether they have an ABN.

If you engage contractors, it may be worth reviewing:

• How the working relationship operates in practice
• The terms of the agreement
• Whether superannuation obligations may apply
• Whether the arrangement has changed over time

Getting the classification wrong can create compliance issues later.

If you’re unsure about an existing or new arrangement, confirm the position with an adviser rather than relying on the title alone.

Asking for help is a business skill, not a weakness.

Business owners are used to figuring things out themselves.

That independence is often what helped them get started.

But as the business grows, trying to know everything can become limiting.

A few useful habits:

• Ask specialists about areas outside your expertise
• Use your team as a source of ideas, not just ex*****on
• Find other business owners you can learn from
• Ask questions before a problem becomes expensive

You don’t need to hand over every decision.

But knowing when to bring someone else into the conversation can lead to better decisions and better outcomes.

Sometimes, the smartest move isn’t having the answer.

It’s knowing who to ask.

What’s one area of business where getting another perspective has helped you?

Fun fact: Your biggest customer can also be one of your biggest business risks.

Landing a large client can be a great milestone. But if too much of your revenue depends on one customer, your business may be more exposed than it appears.

It’s worth knowing:

• How much revenue comes from your largest clients
• What would happen if one significantly reduced their work
• Whether your pipeline has enough diversity
• How dependent certain roles or resources are on one account

A great client is still a great client. The point isn’t to avoid them.

It’s to understand concentration risk before circumstances change.

So, here’s a question worth asking:

How dependent is your business on its top three customers?
