Quick one: could you tell someone your Return on Assets Managed off the top of your head? No? You're in good company 🙂

These six numbers are basically the vital signs of a farming business. You don't need to obsess over them daily, but if you don't know where you sit against any of them, that's worth a proper look, not a guess.

Swipe through, see how you stack up, and if a couple of these have you going "...actually, no idea," that's exactly what we're here for.

Comment below or flick us a message and we'll help you find out.

"Just get bigger" is the most common (and most expensive) advice a struggling farm business gets 💸

Here's the thing: scale is a real lever. It's just the last one, not the first. Before you even think about more country or more assets, two questions are worth answering honestly:

1️⃣ Business model — is your current enterprise mix actually the right fit for your country and your team, or is it just what's always been run here?
2️⃣ Gearing — is your debt sized and structured to survive an average season, not just a great one?

Only once both of those genuinely check out does scale make sense as the next move. Skip straight to "let's expand" without sorting the first two, and you haven't fixed anything, you've just made the same problem bigger and added more debt on top of it.

Which lever do you reckon needs a look on your place first? Genuinely curious 👇 Or if you'd rather talk it through properly, not in a comments section, you know where to find us.

Quick gut check: if you had to pay someone else to do exactly what you do on this farm, what would you pay them? 🤔

Now... is that anywhere close to what you're actually taking out?

This is one of the most common blind spots we see. Family labour gets treated as "whatever's left over" instead of a real wage, at a real market rate. Which sounds harmless, until you realise it's quietly hiding the true profitability of the business (and shortchanging your super and borrowing power while it's at it).

As a rough guide: the principal operator's time is generally worth around $115,000 a year. A second family member, around $75,000. Not pocket money, an actual wage for an actual job.

Paying yourself properly does two things: it shows what the business can genuinely afford, and it protects your future, no matter how the season goes.

So... be honest. Are you paying yourself like an employee, or like whatever's left in the account at the end 😅?

Tell us in the comments, or if the answer's "yikes," send us a message and we'll help you figure out what a fair wage actually looks like for your setup.

Out on Sarah's place right now: fallow sprays are done ✅ grain's being delivered, and the to-do list is doing that thing where it only gets longer the closer harvest gets 😅

We're still waiting on a decent rain event before the sorghum can go in, so like a lot of you, we're watching the sky more than the weather app and hoping it actually delivers this time.

The team's grabbing their last real bit of downtime now too, while there's still a window for it. Once harvest properly kicks off, that window slams shut fast, and it doesn't reopen till it's done.

Here's the thing though: when the season takes over, that's exactly when the books tend to get shoved to the bottom of the pile. If your Xero isn't reconciled and your Figured budgets aren't updated before harvest properly starts, October has a way of becoming a scramble all on its own.

Where are you at? Still waiting on rain too, or already flat out? Tell us below 👇

And if you know your books need sorting before the season swallows the next two months, now's the time, not November.

Big win for anyone who's ever put off buying gear because "who knows if the write-off will still be around" 🎉

The $20,000 instant asset write-off just went from "we'll see" to permanent. For over a decade, this thing got extended (or didn't) right before tax time, which meant plenty of equipment decisions got made on a wing and a prayer. As of 26 August, that guessing game is over.

Turnover under $10 million? Eligible assets under $20,000 can be written off straight away, per asset, with no end date.

The catch (there's always a small one): "eligible" is doing some heavy lifting in that sentence, so this isn't a "buy first, ask later" situation.

Thinking about equipment before EOY? Talk to us before you buy, not after 📞

Save yourself the "wait, does that actually count?" conversation in April.

Let's be honest: spring gets blamed for a lot 🌱

Bank calls, finance renewals, the season ahead all landing at once, and suddenly the books are the thing holding everything up.

But here's the thing. The books didn't fall behind in spring. They fell behind in July, and June, and the month before that, somewhere in the gaps between calving, spraying and everything else that jumps the queue.

Spring doesn't create the scramble. It just hands it a deadline 😅

The farms that walk into a finance chat without the last-minute panic aren't the lucky ones. They're the ones treating the books as a monthly job, not a once-a-year group project.

If your numbers are only ever "current" right before spring... that's worth a chat. Not because spring's coming. Because it'll come again next year too, and the year after that.

Drop a 🙋 if this hits a little close to home, or send us a message if you'd rather sort it than relive it every September.

Quick one to save, not just scroll past.

Australian law sets minimum retention periods depending on the record type, and they're not all the same:
Income and expenditure records: 5 years

💲 Employee and payroll records: 7 years
🏢 Company financial records: 7 years
💰 GST and BAS records: 5 years
👉 TFN information: until no longer required

One to take seriously: intentionally destroying records that are or may be needed as evidence, including for an ATO audit or Fair Work investigation, is a criminal offence under the Crimes Act 1914. When in doubt, keep it.

This is exactly the kind of thing that falls through the cracks when books are managed reactively. AgBooks keeps your records organised and accessible for as long as they need to be, so it's one less thing to think about.

Save this one for later.

If someone asked which enterprise made you the most money per dollar invested this year, could you answer in under a minute?

Do you know your cattle profit before cropping income quietly covers the gap? Has a "good year overall" ever really meant one enterprise did all the work while another just came along for the ride?

If any of those land a bit close, that's not a bookkeeping failure on your part. It usually just means the system was never set up to answer that question.

What's your gut answer? Drop it below.

$1.4M revenue. $180,000 profit. On paper, a solid year.

But that's one number covering three very different enterprises. Split it out, and it tells a different story:

Cropping: $950,000 revenue, $260,000 profit
Cattle: $380,000 revenue, $65,000 loss
Agistment: $70,000 revenue, $15,000 profit

Cropping wasn't just doing fine. It was carrying cattle all year, and nobody knew because the accounts never asked the question.

That loss isn't automatically a reason to get out of cattle. Could be a drought year, a herd rebuild, one bad season. But you can't make that call on a number you can't see.

(Illustrative figures, not a real client's numbers.)

Industry figures suggest billions in Australian farm assets will change hands over the next decade, as land, livestock and operations pass from one generation to the next.

That kind of transition doesn’t run on a handshake and a tax return. Whoever’s stepping in, whether it’s a son, daughter, or someone buying in fresh, needs to actually see how the business performs. What each enterprise makes. What it costs to run. Where the real risk sits.

If the only financial picture of the farm exists in your head, or in a shoebox of invoices, that’s not something you can hand over. It has to be written down, up to date, and clear enough for someone else to pick up and understand.

Succession isn’t just a legal and family conversation. It’s a numbers one too.

The right bookkeeping team makes that conversation easier long before it happens. Clear, enterprise-level records built up year after year mean there’s an accurate picture ready when it’s needed, not a scramble to reconstruct years of history under pressure. That’s the kind of groundwork AgBooks does quietly in the background, so when the time comes to hand over, or step in, the numbers are already there.
