💡 Capital Gains Tax (CGT) - what is it, really?

Put simply, CGT isn’t a separate tax. It’s the income tax you may pay on the profit you make when you sell or dispose of an asset.

CGT can apply to assets such as:

🏠 Rental properties
📉 Shares and investments
💻 Crypto assets

When you dispose of an asset - in other words, when you stop owning it - a CGT event may occur. You’ll then need to report any capital gain or capital loss in your tax return.

📈 Capital gain: A profit on the sale of an asset, which may increase the amount of tax you need to pay.

📉 Capital loss: A loss on the sale of an asset. While it generally can’t reduce your other income, it can be used to offset eligible capital gains in the future - potentially reducing your tax bill.

👉 Don’t forget to report your capital losses! They may be valuable in future years.
