πŸ’‘ Capital Gains Tax (CGT) - What is it, really?

CGT can sound complicated, but here’s the simple version πŸ‘‡

CGT isn’t a separate tax. It’s generally part of your income tax and may apply to the profit you make when you sell or dispose of an asset.

CGT can apply to assets such as:
🏠 Rental properties
πŸ“ˆ Shares & investments
πŸ’» Crypto assets

When you dispose of an asset - essentially, when you stop owning it - a CGT event may occur. You’ll then need to work out whether you’ve made a capital gain or capital loss and report it in your tax return.

πŸ“ˆ Capital gain = You made a profit.
This may increase the amount of tax you need to pay.

πŸ“‰ Capital loss = You made a loss.
A capital loss generally can’t reduce your other income, but it may be carried forward to offset eligible capital gains in future years - potentially reducing your future tax bill.

πŸ‘‰ One important tip: Don’t forget about your capital losses!
Even if you can’t use them this year, they may be valuable in future years.

πŸ’¬ Thinking about selling an investment or other asset?
CGT can depend on your individual circumstances, so it’s worth getting professional advice before you sell to understand the potential tax implications.

As we approach tax time, we'd like to remind our clients that the ATO does not begin processing 2026 Income Tax Returns until mid-July. In addition, employers have until 14 July 2026 to finalise and report employee wage information to the ATO through Single Touch Payroll.

To ensure your income information is complete and accurate, we are unable to lodge most 2026 Income Tax Returns until mid-July, once employer reporting has been finalised and the information is available through the ATO.

In the meantime, now is the perfect time to start gathering your tax records and supporting documents, including:
βœ… Work-related expense receipts
βœ… Donation receipts
βœ… Investment and rental property records
βœ… Private health insurance statements
βœ… Other relevant tax documentation

Getting organised early will help us process your tax return as efficiently as possible once lodgements commence.

If you have any questions, please contact our office on (02) 6342 6509.

We look forward to assisting you this tax season!
