Road taxes are for road users. Fuel tax credits recognise that regional businesses such as mining, farming and tourism should not pay road tax on fuel used off public roads.

In her latest op-ed, Tania Constable warns against attempts to recast fuel tax credits as climate policy, which would add further costs to mining and other regional industries already investing heavily in emissions reduction.

Australia needs policy settings that support investment, competitiveness and the regional industries doing the heavy lifting, not make it more expensive to do business.

Fuel tax credits are not climate policy. They recognise a simple principle: road taxes are for road users.

MCA NT was pleased to attend the Big Rivers Career Expo at Katherine High School, connecting with students and jobseekers interested in the wide range of careers available across the resources industry.

From trades and apprenticeships to engineering, environmental science, technology and professional services, the resources sector offers rewarding careers right here in the NT.

It was also a pleasure to meet with Minister for Education and Training Jo Hersey-Member for Katherine and discuss the importance of building local skills, supporting workforce development, and creating pathways for Territorians to access the many opportunities the sector provides.

Regional Australia is powering the nation - delivering $129.70 in output per hour worked, far outstripping metropolitan areas at $103.10 . But the gap between our highest and lowest performing regions is more than 20-fold, driven by infrastructure, housing, skills and investment constraints that are hold communities back.

Our new Regional Productivity Solutions report shows the pathway forward is clear: place‑based, locally tailored action. Australia needs productivity policy that reflects the real conditions, strengths and barriers in each region.

The RAI has made three policy recommendations to lift national productivity:

✅Improve regional productivity measurement.
✅Embed regional productivity growth as a core pillar of economic policy.
✅Establish funded, place-based regional productivity programs

Stronger regions mean a stronger nation. Tailored investment, better data, and empowered local institutions will unlock the next wave of Australia’s productivity growth.
